¿LA ORACIÓN CAMBIA LAS COSAS? O ¿LAS COSAS CAMBIAN LA ORACION?

“Respondiendo Jesús, les dijo: Tened fe en Dios. Porque de cierto os digo que cualquiera que dijere a este monte: Quítate y échate en el mar, y no dudare en su corazón, sino creyere que será hecho lo que dice, lo que diga le será hecho. Por tanto, os digo que todo lo que pidiereis orando, creed que lo recibiréis, y os vendrá.” (Marcos 11:22-24)

Siempre me sorprenden las costumbres de las mujeres. Ellas van "curioseando" todo el día sin esperar comprar nada; simplemente van a “curiosear”. Así es con mucha gente. Oran y oran, pero no consiguen nada; porque no esperan conseguir nada. La oración que no tiene una petición definida no es verdadera oración.

Cuando salgo a comprar algo como zapatos o un traje, simplemente camino por la fila, escojo lo que quiero y pago y me voy. Todo esto sólo lleva unos minutos. No curiosillo. Yo compro. Y eso es lo que es la oración. La oración es pedir algo definitivamente a Dios: “Si algo pidiereis en mi nombre, yo lo haré.” (Juan 14:14), “Pedid, y se os dará… Porque todo aquel que pide, recibe.” (Mateo 7:7-8)

Los modernistas no creen que la oración cambie las cosas. No aceptan la sencilla enseñanza bíblica de que la oración es pedir y la respuesta es recibir. Creen que la oración es meramente comunión espiritual. Que, en realidad, no recibimos cosas de Dios, pero que después que oramos nos sentimos más fuertes para obtenerlas para nosotros mismos, ¡o tal vez nos resignamos a vivir sin ellas! En Hebreos 11:6 aprendemos que hay dos cosas que debemos creer antes de que nuestra oración sea escuchada: primero tenemos que creer que hay un Dios y segundo tenemos que creer que Dios es un galardonador de los que diligentemente le buscan. Es decir, que Dios oye y contesta la oración. 

¿Las circunstancias y las cosas cambian nuestra oración? Cuando oras según la voluntad de Dios y con fe todo es posible. Esto es orar en el espíritu, una oración de fe.

Cuando oramos en la carne o en nuestro entendimiento, las cosas que nos rodean comienzan a cambiar nuestra oración. Las cosas comienzan a mirarse imposible a nosotros.

Quitar montañas era una forma retórica judía para deshacerse de una gran dificultad. No una verdadera montaña. Dios no se ocupa haciendo cosas tontas, innecesarias.

En el verso veinticuatro de Marcos 11 la palabra 'creed' significa literalmente "seguir creyendo.” Esto es uno de los principales requisitos para conseguir la respuesta a nuestra oración. Muy a menudo nos desanimamos y dejamos de creer antes de que nuestra oración sea contestada.

   

 

DOES PRAYER CHANGE THINGS? OR DO THINGS CHANGE PRAYER?

“And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God. For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.” (Mark 11:22-24)

I am always astonished at the ways of women. They will go “window-shopping” all day long not expecting to buy anything; they merely go to “shop”. This is the way it is with many people. They pray and pray, but do not get anything; because they do not expect to get anything. Prayer that does not have a definite petition is not real prayer.

When I go out to buy something like shoes or a suit, I just walk down the line pick out what I want and pay for it and leave. The whole thing only takes a few minutes. I do not shop. I buy. And that is what prayer is. Prayer is asking something definitely from god: “If ye shall ask anything in my name, I will do it.” (Juan 14:14), “Ask, and it shall be given you… For every one that asketh receiveth” (Matthew 7:7-8).  

Modernists do not believe that prayer changes things. They do not accept the plain Bible teaching that prayer is asking and the answer is receiving. They believe that prayer is merely spiritual fellowship. We do not really get things from God but after we pray we feel stronger to get them for ourselves, or are perhaps resigned to do without them! In Hebrews 11:6 we learn that there are two things we must believe before our prayer is heard: first, we have to believe that there is a God and second we have to believe that God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him. That is, God hears and answers prayer.

Do circumstances and things change our prayer? When you pray according to god’s will and with faith all things are possible. This is praying in the spirit, a prayer of faith.

When we pray in the flesh or our understanding, the things around us begin to change our prayer, Thing starts to look impossible to us.

Removing mountains was a Jewish figure of speech for getting rid of a great difficulty. Not a real mountain. God does not busy himself doing silly, unnecessary things.

In verse twenty-four of Mark 11 the word “believe” literally means “keep on believing.” This is one of the main requirements for getting our prayers answered. Too often we get discouraged and quit believing before our prayer is answered.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

ORANDO EN UNIDAD

“De cierto os digo que todo lo que atéis en la tierra, será atado en el cielo; y todo lo que desatéis en la tierra, será desatado en el cielo. Otra vez os digo, que si dos de vosotros se pusieren de acuerdo en la tierra acerca de cualquiera cosa que pidieren, les será hecho por mi Padre que está en los cielos. Porque donde están dos o tres congregados en mi nombre, allí estoy yo en medio de ellos.” (Mateo 18:19-20)

Orando en unidad es el arma espiritual más poderosa que Dios nos ha dado. La mayoría de los creyentes no tienen idea de la potente arma espiritual que es orando en unidad. Por supuesto, todos los creyentes creen que "la oración cambia las cosas" y que "hay poder en la oración". Pero la mayoría de los creyentes no tienen entendimiento de lo mucho que puede cambiar las cosas la oración o simplemente cuanto poder realmente hay en la oración, menos en cuanto la oración en unidad.

LA BASE BÍBLICA

Jesús hizo una declaración que es la clave para entender el concepto de la oración unida. El significado de esto ha sido poco comprendido. Dios nos ha dado el reino, en el sentido de su autoridad para gobernar. Gobernamos a través de la oración y es en ese sentido que somos reyes, como en Apocalipsis 1:6. Es por esto que podemos tener la respuesta a nuestras oraciones. Tenemos autoridad con Dios. Pero como individuos, nuestra autoridad es limitada. Sólo se desata cuando oramos en unidad.

Tenemos un poder ilimitado en la oración sólo cuando oramos de acuerdo con otros. Nuestro poder se incrementa dramáticamente cuando actuamos en unidad. Como hijos de Dios, somos el Cuerpo de Cristo. Logramos nuestra plena afectividad cuando actuamos como un cuerpo. Y la manera en la que podemos más abierta y directa que podemos hacerlo es cuando nos unimos en la oración.

ESTEMOS DE ACUERDO CON DIOS

No podemos estar orando en contra de la voluntad de Dios. Si lo estamos, lo mejor esperamos que nuestras oraciones no sean contestadas. Cuando Dios concede una petición contraria a su voluntad, como a veces lo hace, lo hace como reprimenda. Un ejemplo de esto se encuentra en Números 11, donde el pueblo de Israel literalmente lloraban por carne, de modo que fue el rechazo flagrante de la voluntad de Dios (Él ya les había dado el maná). ¡Envió la carne, y con ella una plaga!

Debemos entender que la unidad debe ser completa y real para que esto tome efecto. Los creyentes que están orando no sólo pueden estar de acuerdo con los labios, sino que debe estar de acuerdo con sus corazones. Hay varios ejemplos bíblicos de casos de personas unidas en oración en circunstancias que dejan claro que el acuerdo fue con el corazón, con resultados dramáticos.

Uno de los ejemplos es la historia de Esther. En peligro de exterminio como consecuencia de la trama de Amán, los judíos oraron y ayunaron en unidad. El resultado fue que quedó Amán ahorcado en su propia horca y los judíos fueron salvos.

Otro ejemplo fue la liberación de Pedro de la prisión, seguido por la muerte de Herodes en Hechos 12. La Escritura nos dice que la Iglesia celebró una vigilia de oración por Pedro. Ellos oraron y Peter fue liberado.

Un tercer ejemplo es cuando los discípulos estaban en el aposento alto. Hechos 2:1 nos dice que, "todos unánimes esteban juntos..." La palabra griega traducida como "unánimes Juntos" significa "en la misma pasión". Con el acuerdo apasionado que habían estado buscando la promesa del Señor.

El mejor ejemplo en la Biblia es la historia de la victoria de Josafat en II Crónicas 20. Hay varias razones por las que recibido la respuesta que recibió. Cuando se enteró de los ejércitos invasores, Josafat proclamó un ayuno y oración nacional. Ni siquiera se toman el tiempo para considerar sus opciones. Se dirigió directamente a Dios con la oración y el ayuno unido. Todo el mundo ayunó y oraron con el acuerdo debido a las circunstancias y vemos que viene del corazón. También fue la oración de acuerdo con la voluntad de Dios.

HAY PODER EN NÚMEROS

Uno de los errores más grandes que los creyentes cometen es en pensar que "los números no importan". Hay muchas referencias en la Biblia que indican que los números son importantes. Los números si importan mucho, en particular cuando se trata de orar en unidad. La Biblia deja en claro que las oraciones hechas en unidad suelen ser mucho más efectivas que las oraciones ofrecidas por los individuos. Esto no quiere decir que Dios no responde a la oración de una persona. A gran escala, las respuestas son más dramáticas con frecuencia el resultado de muchos creyentes orando en unidad.

Hay un poco conocido principio espiritual que se encuentra en el libro de Levítico que sugiere que nuestro poder en la oración se multiplica cuando nuestros números aumentan. Este principio se aplica a Israel en guerra con sus enemigos. Los versículos claves son Levítico 26:7-8 "Cinco de vosotros perseguirán a Ciento, y ciento de vosotros perseguirán a diez mil."

Ciento persiguiendo a diez mil se requieren cinco veces la potencia relativa de cinco persiguiendo a ciento. Un principio de la aplicación de la doctrina del Antiguo Testamento a la vida de los creyentes es que lo que se aplica a los israelitas materialmente en los tiempos del Antiguo Testamento se aplica a la Iglesia espiritualmente ahora. Así que lo que se les aplica en términos de guerra material se aplica a nosotros en términos de la guerra espiritual. Debemos entender esto cuando oramos como iglesia.

Porque no podemos ver la guerra en marcha, realmente no entendemos exactamente lo que está sucediendo. Sólo hay un ejemplo en toda la Biblia que nos da una pista. Es la historia de Daniel durante su ayuno de tres semanas en el capítulo 10 de su libro. El Arcángel Gabriel estaba tratando de llegar a él con la respuesta a su oración, pero el "príncipe del reino de Persia", un poder demoníaco, lo estaba deteniendo. La persistencia de Daniel trajo la respuesta. Hay poderes demoníacos que trabajan para detener las respuestas a nuestras oraciones. Podemos reprender esos poderes cuando oramos en unidad.

La aplicación de este principio espiritual a la oración y el ayuno, nos encontramos con que si multiplicamos nuestros números en 20, multiplicamos nuestro poder relativo en la oración por cinco. No tendríamos que hacer esta multiplicación muchas veces antes de que nuestro poder relativo fuera mayor que todo el poder de Satanás. Considérese la siguiente tabla:

Cuando 100 creyentes oran en unidad, cada uno tiene 100 veces más poder relativo que al orar solo. Esto sugiere que tan sólo 100 creyentes orando en unidad, y viviendo en obediencia a Dios puede ejercer el control espiritual sobre cual quera ciudad o nación. En teoría, esto debería ser fácil de lograr. Algunos de nosotros orando en unidad podrían realmente hacer una diferencia en el mundo.

 

 

PRAYING IN UNITY

“Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” ( Matthew 18:19-20)

Praying in unity is the most powerful spiritual weapon that God has given to us. Most believers have no idea just how powerful a spiritual weapon united prayer is. Of course, all believers believe that “prayer changes things” and that “there is power in prayer”. But most believers have no understanding of just how much prayer can change things or just how much power there really is in prayer, especially in united prayer.

THE BIBLICAL BASIS

Jesus made a statement that is the key to understanding the concept of united prayer. The full significance of this has seldom been understood. God has given us the Kingdom, in the sense of His authority to rule. We do our ruling through prayer and it is in that sense we are kings, as in Revelation 1:6. It is because of this that we can get our prayers answered. We have authority with God. But as individuals, our authority is limited. It is unleashed only when we pray in unity.

We have unlimited power in prayer only when we pray in agreement with others. Our power increases dramatically when we act in unity. As Children of God, we are the Body of Christ. We achieve our full effectiveness when we act as a Body. And the way in which we can most overtly and directly do so is when we unite in prayer.

AGREE WITH GOD

We can’t be praying against God’s will. If we are, we better hope that our prayers don’t get answered. When God grants a petition contrary to His will, as He sometimes does, He does it as chastisement. One example of this is found in Numbers 11, where the people of Israel literally cried for meat, in a way that was a blatant rejection of God’s will (He had already given them manna). He sent the meat, and with it a plague!

We must understand that the unity must be complete and real for this to take effect. The believers who are praying can’t just be agreeing with their lips; they must be agreeing with their hearts. There are several Biblical examples of cases where people united in prayer and fasting in circumstances that make it clear that the agreement was from the heart, with dramatic results.

One of the examples is the story of Esther. Threatened with extermination as a result of Haman’s plot, the Jews prayed and fasted in unity. The result was that Haman got hanged on his own gallows and the Jews were saved.

Another example was the release of Peter from prison, followed by the death of Herod in Acts 12. The Scripture tells us that the Church held a prayer vigil for Peter. They prayed and Peter was freed.

A third example is when the disciples were in the upper room. Acts 2:1 tells us that, “they were all with one accord...” The Greek word translated “one accord” means “in the same passion”. With passionate agreement, they had been seeking the promise of the Lord.

The best example in the Bible is the story of Jehoshaphat’s victory in II Chronicles 20. There are several reasons why he got the answer he received. When he heard about the invading armies, Jehoshaphat proclaimed a national fast and prayer. He didn’t even take the time to consider his options. He went straight to God with united prayer and fasting. Everyone fasted and prayed with agreement due to the circumstances and we see that it came from the heart. It was also prayer in accordance with the will of God.

THE IS POWER IN NUMBERS

One of the biggest mistakes that believers make is to think that “numbers don’t matter”. There are many references in the Bible that indicate that numbers do matter. Numbers do matter very much in particular when it comes to praying in unity. The Bible makes it clear that prayers prayed in unity are usually far more effective than prayers offered by individuals. This is not to say that God does not answer the prayer of an individual. Large-scale, dramatic answers are more frequently the result of many believers praying in unity.

There is a little-known spiritual principle found in the book of Leviticus that suggests that our power in prayer multiplies as our numbers increase. That principle is applied to Israel at war with its enemies. The key verses are Leviticus 26:7-8 “And five of you shall chase an hundred, and an hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight.”

A hundred putting ten thousand to flight requires five times the relative power of five chasing a hundred. A principle of applying Old Testament doctrine to Christian living is that what applied to the Israelites materially in the Old Testament times applies to the Church spiritually now. So what applied to them in terms of material warfare applies to us in terms of spiritual warfare. We must understand that when we pray and fast as a church body.

Because we can’t see the warfare going on, we don’t really understand just exactly what is happening. There is only one example in the entire Bible that gives us a clue. It is the story of Daniel during his three-week fast in chapter 10 of his book. The Archangel Gabriel was trying to get through to him with the answer to his prayer, but the “prince of the kingdom of Persia”, a demonic power, was holding him back. Daniel’s persistence brought the answer. There are demonic powers working to hold back the answers to our prayers. We can drive those powers away when we pray in unity.

Applying this spiritual principle to prayer, we find that if we multiply our numbers by 20, we multiply our relative power in prayer by five. We wouldn’t have to do that multiplication many times before our relative power would be greater than all the power of Satan. Consider the following table:

When 100 believers pray in unity, each one has 100 times more relative power than he does when praying alone. This suggests that a mere 100 believers praying in unity, and living in obedience to God can exercise spiritual control over any city or country. In theory, this should be easy to achieve. A few of us praying and fasting together in unity could really make a difference in the world.

 

PODRÍA ORAR POR MÍ

“Como el ciervo brama por las corrientes de las aguas, Así clama por ti, oh Dios, el alma mía. Mi alma tiene sed de Dios, del Dios vivo; ¿Cuándo vendré, y me presentaré delante de Dios?... ¿Por qué te abates, oh alma mía, Y por qué te turbas dentro de mí? Espera en Dios; porque aún he de alabarle, Salvación mía y Dios mío.” (Salmo 42:1-2, 11)  

Una noche, cuando estaba luchando contra la depresión y el insomnio, abrí mi Biblia y comencé a leer esta Escritura. Muchos de ustedes probablemente puedan identificarse con tener uno de esos días en los que se sienten deprimidos. Estos versos expresaron exactamente lo que estaba sintiendo. Espiritualmente me sentía seco y añoraba el agua viva de Dios. Intenté realinear mi alma con Dios. Oré y leí la Biblia, pero la pesadez permaneció conmigo. Le pedí a mi esposa que orara por mí y eso me ayudó mucho. Más tarde esa mañana, mientras me vestía, alababa al Señor, aunque todavía me sentía pesado. Poco a poco la pesadez se fue disipando y pude continuar con mi trabajo diario.

A veces es un misterio por qué aparecen los valles en nuestro caminar espiritual. Sí sabemos que tenemos un enemigo que anda merodeando buscando a quién devorar. Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: “Estas cosas os he hablado para que en mí tengáis paz. En el mundo tendréis aflicción; pero confiad, yo he vencido al mundo.” (Juan 16:33). Cuando surgen problemas, podemos usar la oración y hablar la Palabra como nuestra primera línea de defensa. Si esto no logra detener el ataque, necesitamos obtener ayuda de otros hermanos y hermanas cristianos en la batalla. Con demasiada frecuencia el orgullo nos impide confiar en otro creyente y/o pedir oración. A veces es posible que no queramos compartir porque dudamos de que la persona se preocupe por nosotros. No podemos darnos el lujo de permitir que tales barreras nos aíslen del resto del cuerpo de Cristo. Si no me hubiera humillado al pedirle a mi esposa que orara por mí en el incidente mencionado anteriormente, la depresión podría haber continuado y afectado mi ministerio.

El camino cristiano no debe realizarse solo. Dios nos da hermanos y hermanas en el cuerpo de Cristo (1 Corintios 12) para animarnos y ser nuestros escuderos en la guerra espiritual. También tenemos la responsabilidad de ayudarlos cuando sean atacados. Cuando estamos conectados en el cuerpo de Cristo, será menos probable que seamos heridos en la batalla o, peor aún, que nos queden fuera de combate.

 

WOULD YOU PRAY FOR ME

“As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?... Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; For I shall yet praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God.” (Psalm 42:1-2, 11)

Late one night when I was struggling with depression and insomnia I opened my bible and began to read this scripture. Many of you can probably relate to having one of those days when you feel down and out.  These verses expressed exactly what I was feeling. Spiritually, I felt dry and longed for God’s living water. I tried to realign my soul to God. I prayed and read the Bible, yet the heaviness remained with me. I asked my wife to pray for me and that helped greatly. Later that morning as I dressed, I spoke praises to the Lord, even though I still felt heavy. Gradually the heaviness lifted and I was able to go about my day’s work. 

Why the valleys come in our spiritual walk is sometimes a mystery. We do know that we have an enemy who is prowling around looking for who he may devour. Jesus told his disciples, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). When troubles come, we can use prayer and speaking the Word as our first line of defense. If this fails to stem the attack, we need to get help from other Christian brothers and sisters in the battle. Too often pride keeps us from confiding in another believer and/or asking for prayer. Sometimes we may not want to share because we doubt that the person cares about us. We can’t afford to let such barriers isolate us from the rest of the body of Christ. Had I not humbled myself by asking my wife to pray for me in the above incident, the depression may have continued and affected my ministry.   

The Christian walk is not meant to be walked alone. God gives us brothers and sisters in the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12) to encourage us and be our armor bearers in spiritual warfare.  We also have the responsibility of helping them when they are under attack. When we’re connected in the body of Christ, we’ll be less likely to be wounded in battle or worse, taken out of action.   

 

 

¿POR QUÉ ORAR SI DIOS NO CONTESTA?

“Porque en esperanza fuimos salvos; pero la esperanza que se ve, no es esperanza; porque lo que alguno ve, ¿a qué esperarlo? Pero si esperamos lo que no vemos, con paciencia lo aguardamos. Y de igual manera el Espíritu nos ayuda en nuestra debilidad; pues qué hemos de pedir como conviene, no lo sabemos, pero el Espíritu mismo intercede por nosotros con gemidos indecibles. Mas el que escudriña los corazones sabe cuál es la intención del Espíritu, porque conforme a la voluntad de Dios intercede por los santos.”  Romanos 8:24-28

A través de las escrituras se nos dice que debemos orar. Además, Dios ha prometido contestar la oración; “porque es necesario que el que se acerca a Dios crea que le hay, y que es galardonador de los que le buscan.” (Hebreos 11:6). ¿Puede haber alguna duda que Dios contesta la oración?

Aquellos de nosotros que hemos orado sabemos que hay muchas ocasiones cuando no hay ninguna respuesta a nuestras súplicas. ¿Por qué? En algunos casos esto puede ser la desobediencia (Deuteronomio 1:45; I Samuel 14:37, 28:6), pecado secreto (Salmos 66:18); indiferencia o el descuido de la misericordia (Proverbios 21:13); iniquidad (Isaías 59:2; Miqueas 3:4), obstinación (Zacarías 7:13); inestabilidad (Santiago 1:6-7) o auto indulgencia (Santiago 4:3).

¿Qué si estamos viviendo lo mejor que podemos y orando por alguien más, no de una manera egoísta de orar? ¿Por qué no nos oye Dios cuándo oramos? Por una parte Dios promete contestar nuestras oraciones, y aún oramos y oramos, y no hay ninguna respuesta. ¿Por qué? Debe haber algo que nos falta. Santiago 4:3 nos dice por qué algunas oraciones no son contestadas. ¿Cuáles son algunos de estos motivos? II Corintios 12:7, nos dice que Dios no contestó las oraciones de Pablo. En Daniel 10:12-13 y II Corintios 10:4-5 vemos otros motivos por qué las oraciones no son contestadas.

¿Qué, si Dios tiene la intención que la oración sea más que conseguir sólo lo qué queremos o lo qué pensamos que es lo mejor? ¿Qué, si Dios tiene un propósito mucho más grande que lo que estamos pidiendo que sea hecho? ¿Cómo afecta la soberanía de Dios nuestro orar? ¿Por qué oro Jesús, “pero no se haga mi voluntad, sino la tuya”? ¿Por qué no oramos en la misma manera?

Romanos 8:28: "Y sabemos que a los que aman a Dios, todas las cosas les ayudan a bien, esto es, a los que conforme a su propósito son llamados." ¿Podemos creer esto, aun cuando Dios no contesta nuestras oraciones? ¿Tiene usted un caso de esto? ¿Es posible que un día en la eternidad veamos que Dios contestó muchas de nuestras oraciones, de una manera diferente y en un tiempo posterior?

¿Si oramos y no conseguimos respuestas, qué deberíamos hacer? ¿Qué hacemos por lo general? ¿Qué dice este sobre nuestra comprensión de Dios y Su propósito? ¿Es posible que Dios tenga la intención de usar la oración para cambiarnos (nuestra mentalidad, nuestra perspectiva, nuestras prioridades, y nuestro forma de vivir) en vez de darnos algo?

 

WHY PRAY IF GOD DOES NOT ANSWER?

“For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance. Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”  Romans 8:24-28

Throughout the scriptures, we are told to pray. Moreover, God has promised to answer prayer “for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6). Can there be any doubt that God answers prayer?

Those of us who have prayed know there are many times when there is no answer to our pleadings. Why? In some cases it may be disobedience (Deuteronomy 1:45; I Samuel 14:37, 28:6), secret sin (Psalms 66:18); Indifference, neglect of mercy (Proverbs 21:13); iniquity (Isaiah 59:2; Micah 3:4), stubbornness (Zechariah 7:13); instability (James 1:6-7) or self-indulgence (James 4:3).

What if we are living as best we can and praying for someone else, not in a selfish way of praying? Why does He not hear us when we pray? On the one hand, God promises to answer our prayers, and yet we pray and pray, and there is no answer. Why? There must be something we are missing. James 4:3 tells us why some prayers are not answered. What are some of these reasons? In II Corinthians 12:7, we are told that God did not answer Paul’s prayers. In Daniel 10:12-13 and II Corinthians 10:4-5, we see other reasons why prayers are not answered.

What if God intends prayer to be more than just getting what we want or what we think is best? What if God has a far greater purpose than what we are asking to be done? How does the sovereignty of God affect our praying? Why did Jesus pray, “Nevertheless, not my will but thine be done”? Why do we not pray in the same manner?

Romans 8:28: “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” Can we believe this, even when God does not answer our prayers? Do you have an instance of this? Is it possible that one day in eternity we will see that God answered many of our prayers, in a different way and at a later time?

If we pray and do not get answers, what should we do? What do we usually do? What does this say about our understanding of God and His purpose? Is it possible that God intends to use prayer to change us (our thinking, our outlook, our priorities, and our way of life) instead of giving us something?
