"...Y he aquí sentadas endechando a Tamuz” (Ezequiel 8:13-14).

"Y me dijo: ¿No ves...?

WHAT IS LENT?

According to history 4,000 years before the birth of Christ Lent was already being observed! It was still being observed during the time of Jesus and in the days of the Apostles. Yet, Christ did not institute it and He never observed it! The Apostles and the early apostolic church never observed it either. When, where and who started the practice of Lent?

The Lenten season is a period of abstinence of 40 days, beginning with Ash Wednesday. The word Lent comes from an old English word “Lenten” which means the springtime. The celebration of Lent originally was associated with the spring. However, nowadays it is celebrated in the winter! Why? Where did it originate and when was the celebration changed from spring to winter?

If we look back in history to the close of the second century, a hundred years after the death of the last Apostle, we find that in a letter written to the bishop of Rome about Lent the following; “For the controversy is not only concerning the day, (there was a controversy over the time to celebrate the day called Easter) but also concerning the very manner of the fast (the fast of the Lenten season.). For some think that they should fast one day, others two, yet others more and some forty days.” This letter was written by Ireneaus, a bishop form Lyon, France. “And this variety in its observance,” continued Irenaeus, “has not originated in our time, but long before in that of our ancestors. It is likely they did not hold to strict accuracy and thus formed a custom for their posterity according to private fancy,” not Apostolic authority or Christ’s command! [History of the Church by Eusebio, book 5, chapter 24]

Lent came into the church through custom, through private fancy. The church observed Lent, not because the Bible commanded it, but because professing Christians adopted the custom from their gentile neighbors. “As long as the perfection of the primitive church, the inspired Apostolic church, remained inviolable,” wrote Cassian, a Catholic historian of the 5th century, “there was no observance of Lent, but when men began to decline from the Apostolic fervour of devotion, then the priests in general agreed to recall them from secular cares by a canonical induction of fasting…” [Antiquities of the Christian Church, book 21, chapter 1]. Fasting or abstinence from certain foods was imposed after the days of the Apostles by the authority of the priests! Lent is not of Apostolic origin. It did not originate with Christ or His Apostles. It entered at the same time that Easter did! It was introduced to the Christendom of the Roman world in the second century together with Easter Sunday. But, when did Easter Sunday originate?

Here is what Socates Scholasticus wrote in the Ecclesiastical History, not long after Emperor Constantine came to power in the fourth century of the Christian era, “Neither the Apostles, therefore, nor the Gospels, have anywhere imposed Easter, wherefore in as much as men love festivals, because they afford them cessation from labor: each individual in every place, according to his own pleasure, has by a prevalent custom celebrated (Easter). The Saviour and His Apostles have enjoined us by no law to keep this feast, just as many other customs have been established in individual localities according to usage, so also the feast of Easter came to be observed in each place, according to the individual peculiarities of the peoples inasmuch as none of the Apostles legislated on the matter. And that the observance originated not by legislation, but as a custom the facts themselves indicate” [chapter 22]. Easter originated as a custom of the people and so did Lent. Lent is merely the introduction to Easter. Easter is the climax of Lent.

From what city did the celebration of Lent begin to spread throughout the professing Christianity of the Roman world? The Catholic Encyclopedia records the following: “In any case it is certain from the festival letters of Saint Athanasius that in 331, he enjoined upon his flock a period of forty days of fasting preliminary to, Holy week and second that in 339, after having traveled to Rome and over the greater part of Europe, [he] wrote in the strongest terms to urge this observance [of Lent] upon the people under his jurisdiction.” Athanasius, Bishop of Alexandria in Egypt, was influenced by Roman customer. It was at Romethat not only Easter, but also Lent, entered the Christian world. Irenaeus confirmed this when he wrote in his famous letter that Lent and Easter were introduced during the time of Bishop Xystus of Rome. This Bishop did not permit those after him to observe the Apostolic practice of commemorating the death of Jesus. Instead, he introduced the custom of Easter and Lent. But, from where did the Bishops of Rome obtain the custom of Lent?

In the early church, Lent was always called “Tessarakoste,” in Greek, or “Quadragesima” in Latin. These two words mean; “count forty”. Lent, though sometimes celebrated for only one or two days or for several weeks, was always called the celebration of forty days! Why? Why should a period of abstinence have gone by this name even though it was not until the beginning of the eighth century after Christ that the final number of forty days was fastened on the whole church? The answer is obvious, abstinence among the pagans was by the name “count forty” because that is the length of time they celebrated their spring festival! Remember, the word Lent means “spring”. The historian Wilkinson, in his book Egyptian Antiquities, chapter 3 page 181, wrote that the pagans kept fasts, many of which lasted from seven to forty-two days and sometimes even a longer period.

The original length of the fast, traced back to ancient Babylon 4,000 years ago, was a forty day fast in the spring of the year [from the book Nineveh and Babylonia, by Layard, chapter 4, page 93]. That is why it bore its name of “forty days” or Lent! Each nation gradually changed the length of celebration, but they all retained the name. The professing Christians of the second century merely adopted the customs found in their respective countries, which is why they were divided as to its length from the beginning. It took the churches of the western world nearly eight centuries to re-impose a total period of forty days abstinence, as had been the original custom at Babylon. Christianity today has turned to pagan customs instead of the commands of God found in the Bible.

Lent is nowhere commanded or mentioned in the New Testament but it is mentioned in the Old Testament! Lent was an indispensable preliminary to the great annual festival in commemoration of the death and resurrection of Tammuz, the pagan Babylonian counterfeit of the Messiah. The Babylonian lunar months of June and July were named in honor of this false Babylonian messiah. Forty days preceding the feast of Tammuz, usually celebrated in June, the pagans held their Lenten season.

Ezekiel describes it vividly in chapter eight of his book the thirteenth and fourteenth verses: “He said also unto me, turn thee yet again and thou shalt see greater abominations.” You will notice that God calls what Ezekiel is about to see an abomination. What does the prophet see? “And, behold, there sat women weeping for Tammuz.” They wept for Tammuz, the false messiah of the pagans. That weeping preceded the pagan festival in honor of a supposed resurrection of Tammuz. Fasting was joined with weeping for a period of forty days before the festival in honor of Tammuz. The period of fasting, weeping, and semi-fasting take place during the springtime. That is why the word Lent means “spring”.
Lent is a continuation of the pagan springtime custom of abstaining from certain foods just prior to celebrating a supposed resurrection of a pagan Babylonian deity. God calls the celebration of Lent an abomination. That is why Christ and the Apostolic Church never observed it! The Apostle Paul forbade the believers to observe these pagan “times or seasons” (Galatians 4:10).

Surely, people nowadays are sincere, but so were the pagans. Nevertheless, what if Easter and Lent are ancient pagan festivals? Isn’t it still all right, if we use them to honor Christ? That is the way people reason. Let God answer that question. God spoke to Moses to warn the people that they should not follow these customs of the pagans. Here are the words of God: “Take heed…that thou enquire not after their gods, saying; how did these nations serve their gods? Even so will I do likewise. Thou shalt not do so unto the Lord thy God! For every abomination to the Lord, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods: (Deut. 12:30-31).

Here is what God says. It does not matter what we think, but it does matter what He thinks. He calls these pagan Easter and Lenten customs abominations because they commemorate false ideas. The penitence of Lent is a form of worldly sorrow over the things that smite one’s conscience. However, conscience is not a sufficient guide to right or wrong. The penitence of Lent is a counterfeit of genuine repentance of sin. Easter commemorates a supposed Sunday morning resurrection of Jesus, though in fact Jesus was resurrected, according to the Bible, on Saturday evening, after He had been in the tomb three days and three nights. It is therefore not surprising that the apostles could never have taught the Church the observance of these heathen customs. Is it any wonder that Jeremiah was inspired to write: “Learn not the way of the heathen…for the customs of the people are in vain” (Jeremiah 10:2-3).

Notice that Lent precedes immediately the celebration of Resurrection Sunday (Easter), supposedly that of Christ. However, Christ did not resurrect on a Sunday. The New Testament, in none of its passages, orders us to observe Christ's resurrection. What we are commanded to observe is the commemoration of his death. The Primitive Apostolic Church observed that one commemorative, but it never celebrated either Easter Sunday or Lent. God never ordered the celebration of this Sunday in honor of the resurrection. All this is in honor of the false messiah, Tammuz.

Easter Sunday and Lent celebrate the resurrection of the false Christ. Paul warned about the spread of this custom: "For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached ...” (II Corinthians 11:4). Moreover, this is exactly what has happened. Lent celebrates another Jesus, the false Messiah of Babylonia. The celebration of a festival on Sunday, to honor the resurrection, comes directly from paganism. The pagans were celebrating the resurrection of Tammuz, immediately after Lent. This festival was propagated throughout the professing Christian world after the death of the apostles.

Notice that immediately after the observance of Lent, the prophet Ezekiel sees that the people celebrate a sunrise service of resurrection: “Then said he unto me, Hast thou seen this…? [The fasting of Lent] Turn thee yet again, and thou shalt see greater abominations than these”. [What does the prophet see?] Men prostrating themselves to the East, and worshipping the Sun! Sunrise services on Easter Sunday, the culmination of the forty days of Lent (Ezekiel 8:15-16).

WHAT IS INIQUITY

“Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? And in thy name have cast out devils? And in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” (Matthew 7:22-23)

It is surprising that most believers do not know what iniquity is. To many, iniquity and sin are synonymous. However, when you study the topic of sin in the bible you will find that there is a big difference between sin and iniquity. The words, sin, and iniquity, are found together in some form in about 70 verses in the Bible. Many times, they are used parallel to one another, as in Psalm 38:18. Although they have the same basic meaning, there is something that distinguishes them.

Iniquity in the Hebrew is “`avon” and means, “to bend, twist, distort” so iniquities are a bending, twisting, or distorting of the law or God’s Word to different degrees worthy of punishment.

Sin means “to miss the mark", it can also mean doing something against God or a person (Exodus 10:16), doing the opposite of what is right (Galatians 5:17), doing something that'll have negative results (Proverbs 24:33-34), and failing to do what you know is right (James 4:17). Sin leads to trespassing a line that should not be crossed. A trespass may be intentional or unintentional.

Transgression (“Pesha”) is a willful act of disobedience. It is a transgression done specifically to spite God. Transgression refers to presumptuous sin. It means “to choose to intentionally disobey; willful trespassing.” When we knowingly run a stop sign, tell a lie, or blatantly disregard an authority, this is transgressing. David meant this kind of sin when he wrote, “Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered” (Psalm 32:1).

The bible uses words like iniquity, transgression, sin, and trespasses to indicate the varying degrees of disobedience. Iniquity refers to a willful, knowing transgression of God’s law where one’s desires starts to dominate the person’s life.

First John 3:4 gives perhaps the best definition of sin that there is in the Bible and it says “Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.” Therefore, sin is the transgression of the law of God. Every iniquity is sin but some sins are not as worthy of punishment as others.

A big part of the mystery of iniquity that the Word of God speaks about is to have God’s people believe that sin is the same thing as iniquity. Every believer knows that sin is a transgression of God’s law, but when it comes to iniquity many have no idea.

Iniquity is more deeply rooted. Iniquity means “premeditated choice, continuing without repentance.”Micah 2:1 says, “Woe to those who plan iniquity, to those who plot evil on their beds! At morning’s light they carry it out because it is in their power to do it.” Iniquity left unchecked leads to a state of willful sin with no fear of God. The build-up of unrepentant sin is compared as a “cup of iniquity” filled to the brim (Revelation 17:4; Genesis 15:16). The sons of Eli are examples of reprobates whom God judged for their iniquities instead of repenting, the sons continued in their abominations until repentance was no longer possible (I Samuel 3:13-14).

In many places in the scriptures, iniquity also seems to be a word dealing with all kinds of sin. However, with iniquity, there is a difference. First of all, whereas sin deals with the action or lack of action that is wrong, iniquity deals more with the character or nature of the act. The word, iniquity, comes from in-equity and it refers to that which is unequal, unfair, or unjust. That explains why David in Psalm 32:5 refers to "the iniquity of my sin." His sinful actions had the character of iniquity; of being unequal.

Iniquity consists of violating the law of right between two individuals. It is to wrongful or injurious actions towards another, infliction of wrong, injury. To practice iniquity is to be unjust and unequal in our dealings with others. The scripture refers to them as the workers of iniquity.  The money Judas received for betraying Jesus is called "the reward of iniquity" (Acts 1:18).

Iniquity also involves a transgression of the law of God but it is more severe. In essence, iniquity is excusing our sin, rationalizing our sin, or failing to agree with God that our sin is sin. Adam’s sin of eating the forbidden fruit turned to iniquity when he said, “The woman whom Thou gavest to be with me, she gave me...”

When God’s word says you have transgressed His law, and you say anything other than to ask forgiveness you are in iniquity. Only the power of the Blood of Jesus can cover our sin and empower us to stop sinning. If we hide our sin, or fail to agree with God, or do not purpose to stop and turn away from our sin, then it becomes iniquity.

Jesus came to save sinners. He cannot and will not save workers of iniquity. Iniquity is sin which instead of saying Amen to the convicting voice of the Holy Spirit, says everybody sins every day. When iniquity is left unchecked, iniquity becomes full, and one will no longer hear the convicting voice of the Holy Spirit. Iniquity gives any excuse or any covering of any sin other than repenting and seeking forgiveness. Matthew 7:22-23 tells us why it is very important that we understand the difference between sin and iniquity. There will not be any workers of iniquity in heaven. A worker of iniquity is anyone who makes excuses for his sin.

The danger with iniquity is that in making excuses for our sin, we not only refuse to repent, but we are in essence calling God an unjust or unrighteous Judge. We judge God when we excuse our sin and turn it into iniquity. For any sin to be forgiven we must admit it is sin. Sin is not a mistake as many teach today.

THE TRUTH BEHIND VALENTINE’S DAY

Valentine’s Day is the world’s “holiday of love.” Since the Bible states that God is love (I John 4:8, 16) does He approve of the celebration of this day? Does He want His people partaking of any customs associated with this day? Like Christmas, Easter, Halloween and other holidays, Valentine’s Day is another attempt to “whitewash” perverted customs and observances of pagan gods and idols by “Christianizing” them.

In 313 A.D., Roman Emperor Constantine legalized Christianity and ended Rome's persecution of Christians. In 380 A.D., Christianity is made the official state religion of the Roman Empire. These actions not only enabled the teachings of Christianity to spread unhindered within the empire, but it also encouraged non-Christians to convert to the once-persecuted religion.

The pagans, however, who adopted Christianity as their religion did not entirely abandon the traditions and practices they held before their "conversion." One of these traditions brought into the church was the fertility celebration known as the Lupercalia.

As innocent and harmless as Valentine’s Day may appear, its traditions and customs originate from two of the most sexually perverted pagan festivals of ancient history: Lupercalia and the feast day of Juno Februata. Celebrated on February 15, Lupercalia (known as the “festival of sexual license”) was held by the ancient Romans in honor of Lupercus, god of fertility.

On this day, the Luperci (priests) of Lupercus, assisted by Vestal Virgins, dressed in goatskins for a bloody ceremony. The priests of Lupercus, the wolf god, would sacrifice goats and a dog and then smear themselves with blood. These priests, made red with sacrificial blood, would run around Palatine Hill in a wild frenzy while waving a goatskin thong called a “februa.” Women would sit all around the hill, as the bloody priests would strike them with the goatskin thongs to make them fertile. The young women would then gather in the city and their names were put in boxes. These “love notes” were called “billets.” The men of Rome would draw a billet, and the woman whose name was on it became his sexual lust partner with whom he would fornicate until the next Lupercalia or February 14th. This custom was observed in the Roman Empire for centuries.

Thus, February 14th became a day of unbridled sexual lust. The color “red” was sacred to that day because of the blood and the “heart shape” that is popular to this day. The heart-shape was not a representation of the human heart, which looks nothing like it. This shape represents the human female matrix or opening to the chamber of sacred copulation.

When the Gnostic Catholic Church began to get a foothold in Rome around the 3rd century A.D., they became known as Valentinians. The Catholic Valentinians retained the sexual license of the festival in what they called “angels in a nuptial chamber”, which was also called the “sacrament of copulation.” This was said to be a reenactment of the marriage of “Sophia and the Redeemer.” As the participants of the February 14th ritual began their sexual sacrament, it was presided over and watched by the priests known as Valentinians,

In A.D. 494, Pope Gelasius renamed the festival of Juno Februata as the “Feast of the Purification of the Virgin Mary.” It is also known as Candlemas, the Presentation of the Lord, and the Purification of the Blessed Virgin and the Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple.

After Constantine had made the Roman church’s brand of Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire (A.D. 325), church leaders wanted to do away with the pagan festivals of the people. Lupercalia was high on their list. Nevertheless, the Roman citizens thought otherwise.

It was not until A.D. 496 that the Church of Rome was able to do anything about Lupercalia. Powerless to get rid of it, Pope Gelasius instead changed it from February 15 to the 14th and called it St. Valentine’s Day. It was named after one of that church’s saints, who, in A.D. 270, was executed by the emperor for his beliefs.

The church whitewashed Lupercalia even further. Instead of putting the names of girls into a box, the names of “saints” were drawn by both boys and girls. It was then each person’s duty to emulate the life of the saint whose name he or she had drawn. This was Rome’s vain attempt to “whitewash” a pagan observance by “Christianizing” it. Though the church at Rome had banned the sexual lottery, young men still practiced a much toned-down version, sending women whom they desired handwritten romantic messages containing St. Valentine’s name.

FIRST MAN CALLED VALENTINE

However, who was the original Valentine? What does the name Valentine mean? Valentine comes from the Latin Valentinus, which derives from valens—“to be strong, powerful, mighty.” The Bible describes a man with a similar title: “And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth. He was a mighty hunterbefore the Lord: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the Lord” (Gen. 10:8-9)). He was said to have hunted with bow and arrow.

As mentioned, the Romans celebrated Lupercalia to honor the hunter god Lupercus. To the Greeks, from whom the Romans had copied most of their mythology, Lupercus was known as Pan, the god of light. The Phoenicians worshipped the same deity as Baal, the sun god. Baal was one of many names or titles for Nimrod, a mighty hunter, especially of wolves. He was also the founder and first lord of Babel (Gen. 10:10-12). Defying God, Nimrod was the originator of the Babylonian Mystery Religion, whose mythologies have been copied by the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Romans and a multitude of other ancient peoples. Under different names or titles—Pan, Lupercus, Saturn, Osiris—Nimrod is the strong man and hunter-warrior god of the ancients.

What does the heart symbol have to do with a day honoring Nimrod/Valentine? The title Baal means “lord” or “master,” and is mentioned throughout the Bible as the god of pagans. God warned His people not to worship or even tolerate the ways of Baal (Nimrod). In ancient Chaldean (the language of the Babylonians), bal, which is similar to Baal, meant, “heart.” This is another reason why the heart symbol was used on this day.

The name Cupid comes from the Latin verb cupere, meaning “to desire.” Cupid was the son of Venus, Roman goddess of beauty and love. Also known as Eros in ancient Greece, he was the son of Aphrodite. According to myth, he was responsible for impregnating numerous goddesses and mortals. Cupid was a child-like archer (remember, Nimrod was a skilled archer). Mythology describes Cupid as having both a cruel and happy personality. He would use his invisible arrows, tipped with gold, to strike unsuspecting men and women, causing them to fall madly in love. He did not do this for their benefit, but to drive them crazy with intense passion, to make their lives miserable, and to laugh at the results.

WHAT GOD THINKS (Jeremiah 10:2-3, Matthew 15:9)

Does it matter that an ancient festival used to worship pagan gods and promote fertility was adopted by the church and used to worship the God of the Bible? Does God really care what customs are used to worship and honor Him or what holidays we celebrate?

Throughout the Bible, God describes “heathens” as those who worship things that He had created (animals, the sun, the moon, stars, trees, etc.), or man-made idols, or anything but the one true God. He calls such people and their practices pagan. True believers understand that God hates any customs, practices, and traditions that are rooted in paganism.

When God rescued the twelve tribes of Israel from Egypt, He commanded them, “After the doings of the land of Egypt, wherein you dwelt, shall you not do: and after the doings of the land of Canaan, where I bring you, shall you not do: neither shall you walk in their ordinances” (Lev. 18:3). God demanded the Israelites not to defile themselves with the pagan practices and customs of surrounding nations (vs. 24-29). “Therefore shall you keep Mine ordinance, that you commit not any one of these abominable customs, which were committed before you, and that you defile not yourselves therein: I am the Lord your God” (vs. 30).

"You shall NOT worship the Lord your God in that way;   for every abomination to the Lord which He hates they have done to their gods . . .” (Deuteronomy 12:29-31). The issue in this passage is not the worship of other gods. The warning is to not adopt customs used to worship or honor other gods in order to serve and worship the true God. The Israelites were severely punished because they lusted after pagan customs, rituals, traditions, and practices. As you can see, God does not take paganism lightly.

“COME OUT OF HER, MY PEOPLE”

Concerning this pagan, satanic system, God commands His people, “Come out of her, My people, that you be not partakers of her sins, and that you receive not of her plagues” (Rev 18:4).

Valentine’s Day originates from the ancient paganism of this Satan-influenced world. It is designed to deceive mankind by appealing to fleshly, carnal desires—or, as the Bible calls them, the works of the flesh. “Now the works of the flesh are manifest [made obvious], which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry…drunkenness, revellings, and such like” (Gal. 5:19-21). Does any of this sound like Lupercalia to you?

In conclusion, it should be without saying that as true believers we should not celebrate Valentine’s Day. In God’s eyes, it is still “Lupercalia”. We must ask ourselves, “Should we, as children of God, be associated in any way with this celebration of evil roots? Should we be doing what the heathen have done for so many years and try to justify it as love?” Romans 12:2 answers this very well, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…”

A true child of God knows that he must actively come out of this world, out of its pagan-infested customs, practices, and traditions. The true origin of Valentine's Day and its symbols are rooted in the worship of false gods and have no Biblical basis.
