THE BIBLE AND EUTHANASIA

"And as it is appointed unto men once to die" Hebrews 9:27
Euthanasia is becoming more popular every year. This issue of euthanasia is a by-product of 20th century medical success. People who formerly would have died are now kept alive by advanced medical treatments. Along with this prolonged life have come difficult ethical decisions, and slogans like "the right to die," "the choice not to suffer," "death with dignity," "doctor-assisted suicide" and "living wills." Some countries allow the publication of instructions for do-it-yourself suicide!
Euthanasia, sometimes called "mercy killing," literally means "good death" (from the Greek words eu, "well," and thanatos, "death"). The medical profession define euthanasia as "the intentional taking of a human life for some good purpose, such as to relieve suffering or pain. Commonly the word denotes the taking of an adult life, though it can refer generally to taking any life after birth for supposed benevolent purposes. Euthanasia is assisted suicide. The relationship between suicide and euthanasia is so close that to justify either one is to justify the other. Infanticide (killing an infant or child), euthanasia (killing an adult), suicide (killing self), and even genocide (killing an entire race) are the same in theory (killing for supposed benevolent ends); they differ only in application.
Sometimes you will hear the terms "active euthanasia," and "passive euthanasia." What is the difference between the two? Active euthanasia refers to taking a life (producing death), where as "passive euthanasia" refers to allowing a death to occur without intervening (permitting death). The former usually involves the injection of a death-inducing drug, and the latter usually involves the withdrawal of medical treatment which results in a disease or sickness naturally leading to death. One must also be familiar with the terms "voluntary euthanasia" and "involuntary euthanasia." In the former, the patient has requested a desire to end life, and in the latter, a third party, usually a close relative, decides to end life. When these four (active, passive, voluntary, involuntary) are combined, we get four classes of euthanasia.
Throughout history people have not supported a patient's right to die, but times and laws are changing. Like the ancient Greek world, people are now divided over the issue of euthanasia. Passive euthanasia is widely practiced in many countries and active euthanasia is gaining popularity.
There is no question that the world is traveling down the slippery slope from abortion to euthanasia. The first paved the way for the latter when it gave up the sanctity of human life. Even the pro-euthanasia advocates admit this. Abortion is "fetal euthanasia" and infanticide is "postnatal abortion."
There are many moral questions surrounding euthanasia today. People will continue to seek medical treatment and live or die as a result of their choice of treatment. What is the church to do when faced with such a situation? We must answer some difficult questions. The key questions in this issue include: "Are we preserving life, or prolonging death?" "Will the patient who dies be a victim of euthanasia, or a victim of a fatal ailment?" "Are we taking a life, or allowing a natural death?" "Are we providing the patient with natural means of sustaining life (food, water, air), or artificial means?" "What are our intentions, to end a life prematurely, or to avoid death?" "Do we desire the removal of non-beneficial treatment, or death itself?" If we have to answer these difficult questions one day regarding the care of a loved one, we must remember our basic moral obligation: to prolong life, not to prolong death.
When we turn to the religious community for answers to the problem of euthanasia we don't get much help. Both Catholics and Jews oppose the practice, but there are varying views among Protestants. Of course the religion of humanism is very much in favor of it, recognizing an "individual's right to die with dignity, euthanasia, and the right to suicide". The answer to this difficult issue does not lie within medical, philosophical or theological theories, but within the Word of God. What we need to do in this case, as with any question, is go to the Bible for answers. We know that "it is appointed unto man to die once" (Hebrews 9:27). The question is, "When and how should man die?" It is clear from God's word that euthanasia is immoral. Why? Euthanasia, like abortion, infanticide, suicide or genocide, is intentional homicide or murder, and therefore immoral (Exodus 20:13).
Let's take the case of King Saul who was mortally wounded in battle and begged his armor-bearing to take his life. When Saul's servant refused, Saul attempted suicide (1 Samuel 31:1-6). Later when an Amalekite passed by, Saul begged him to take his life and the Amalekite did so with good motives. The Amalekite was later judged for "putting forth his hand to destroy" (II Samuel 1:1-16). The case of Abimelech is similar (Judges 9:50-57). We find here that killing, regardless of the request by the one suffering, and regardless of the good motives of the one doing the killing, is immoral.
We are given positive Biblical principles that address the specific situation of old age. We have a Biblical command to care for the aged and not abandon them (Deuteronomy 28:50; Leviticus 19:32; Isaiah 1:23; Matthew 15:3-5; Ephesians 6:2; James 1:27; 1 Timothy 5:4,8). We would do well to remember the words in the Psalmist's prayer to God: "Do not cast me off in the time of old age; Do not forsake me when my strength faileth" (Psalm 71:9). Remember also the wisdom of Solomon: "Deliver those who are being taken away to death, And those who are staggering to slaughter. O hold them back" (Proverbs 24:11).
Let us remember the difference between "sanctity of life" and "quality of life." The Bible teaches us that we must live on, even though our "quality of life" may be poor. Human suffering is not to be eradicated by death. We are to live with suffering, and learn from it (Romans 5:3-4; 1 Peter 1:6-9; 2 Corinthians 1:3-11). The pro-euthanasia advocates, on the other hand, believe that a life has value and should be prolonged only as long as it has some good "quality" to it. According to them, when the "good life" is gone, it's time to die. The "quality of life" argument was made back in 1973 by George Paulson: "How long shall life be preserved when there is no redeeming social value? If life has no apparent purpose, perhaps it is to the benefit of others that such lives not be salvaged". The Church, on the other hand, believe in the "sanctity of life." That is, every life, young or old, healthy or sick, prospering or suffering, has value and should be prolonged because man has a soul and is made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27; 9:6). In other words, the Word of God teaches that life does not stop when the "good life" stops; it does not stop when suffering sets in; it stops when God's time for it to stop comes (Job 1:21). Life must go on, not because of the good or bad of outward circumstances (quality of life), but rather because of its inward value (sanctity of life). Euthanasia, then, is a convenient way to remove suffering. We need more "compassion for life" and less "passion for convenience". The end (relief from suffering) does not justify the means (euthanasia). We don't need more "mercy killing" for the those who suffer, we need more "mercy-service" to help them live with the pain. We need less of Job's wife "Curse God and die!" and more of Job "Shall we indeed accept good from God and not accept adversity?"
Currently we kill the unborn (abortion), we kill the new born (infanticide) and we kill the aged (euthanasia). Unless we do something drastic to  reverse our moral position on the sanctity of life, it will only be a matter of time before we, like Adolf Hitler, kill with impunity all those in between (genocide). It is really no wonder that we have the problem of euthanasia since we have a generation of doctors and moral ethicists weaned on the evolution theory. We are just animals, according to that theory. We kill our domesticated pets; we kill our humans; no problem, we are all animals anyway. Animals kill their own, why shouldn't we? But shooting a horse who is suffering, and injecting a drug into an elderly patient suffering are not moral equivalents, because man is not an animal. The Russian poet Dostoyesky remarked: "If God is not, then nothing is morally wrong." May God give this world time to come back to Him, back to the morals found in His word, the Bible, and back to the sanctity of human life.
People in pain may come to us and speak like the prophet Jonah once spoke: "O Lord, please take my life from me, for death is better to me than life" (Jonah 4:3,8,9). When they do, let us not assist them in their death, but let us act like God did with Jonah; care for them, comfort them and communicate with them.

(I Corintios 6:19-20; 7:1-5 )

Tenemos algunas libertades limitadas.

1. Huid de la fornicación.

2. Aprende a amar, apreciar y cuidar al bebé.

THE BIBLICAL RESPONSE TO ABORTION

Genesis 1:2, 9:6, Isaiah 44:24

Cultures can be judged in many ways, but eventually every nation in every age must be judged by this test: How did it treat its people? Each generation, evaluates its predecessors on this basis. The final measure of mankind's humanity is how humanely people treat one another. This issue is volatile because of what’s at stake: “human life!

Abortionist claims that it is a "woman's right to private choice.” It is her civil right!  It's her body! Is it her body? Medically yes, spiritually no! (I Corinthians 6:19-20; 7:1-5)

There is no question about the pro choice concept if we were discussing a simple medical issue: gall stones, tumor, tonsils, kidneys, but when human life is at issue: it is everyone's concern!

We do have some limited freedoms. I have freedom of speech but I cannot yell fire in a crowded auditorium. My freedom of speech ends where the endangerment of others starts.

Abortion is an old issue: Dates back over 2,000 yrs to Pagan cultures! There was obviously a public outcry at some point. In Bible days children were looked down with disdain of sorts until Jesus elevated them to a significant level (Luke 18:15-17).  Jesus showed the true value of children!

Athenagorus was a second century Christian that was called upon to defend the Christian faith against certain charges. He outlined the basic Christian position of the early church as follows:

1. Abortion is considered murder

2. The guilty must give account to God

3. The fetus is a living being, the object of God's care

The reason this issue is alive again is the humanist sexual revolution! Humanism says: “Personal gratification repudiates Biblical morality!”

To be "sexually free" has caused bondage in other areas though: Sexual transmitted deceases, aids, divorce, broken families! There are no "free" choices! Every choice carries a cost!

The Allen Guttmacher Institute, research arm of Planned Parenthood reported the following findings

1. 1% of abortions are due to incest or rape

2. 1% is because of fetal deformities

3. 4% were due to a doctor deciding the mother’s life was in danger

4. 50% woman said they did not want to be a single parent, they were having relationship problems

5. 66 % said they could not afford a child

6. 76 % said child would interfere with their lifestyle

It is sad to say but it is a fact, 95% of abortions that are preformed are for convenience of the mother! Abortion is murdering for convenience. It is exchanging the murder of an innocent little human for sex, money, career, education, and material goods. This is not love, but hate. Abortion is a hate crime. No one murders someone they love.

THE ROOT OF THE DEBATE: WHEN DOES LIFE BEGIN?

Some say that a fetus is only a mass of unviable tissue; it is only "potential" life. These people view a pregnancy as a "what" instead of a "who". If a fetus isn't a human being, then what kind of being is it? If it is growing, it must be alive. If it is not alive, then why does it have to be killed? Fetus is the Latin word for infant. The child is called an infant both inside and outside the womb. Note that when a woman was pregnant in the Bible (Luke 2:5), she was said to be "with child." Therefore, the only distinction between the word child in the womb or outside is the word "with."

From the biological standpoint, human life obviously begins at the moment of conception, exactly when the sperm fertilizes the egg. Doctors tell us that the moment of conception unites 23 chromosomes into 46 chromosomes. Full human DNA is ready. The fertilized egg has all the information in the genes that make a human being, all the information that makes us. In fact, for the rest of our life, no new information is ever adding. Therefore, it is obvious that human life begins at the moment of conception.

BIBLICAL CONCEPT:  Job 31:13-15; Isa. 44:24, 49:1; Ps. 139:13; Jer. 1:4-8

The law of the land is an unbiblical view. We need to honor the Bible! We must make biblical choices! Human life is more valuable. All life comes from God! All life was created by God, but only Humans bear his image (not animal life) Gen. 9:5-6. God has set mankind apart among his creation: It is not self evaluation! In fact, most evolutionists accept that human life begins at the moment of conception, but because they believe in evolution and therefore believe that we are just animals, for them abortion is no different from kill mice.

Exodus 21:22 tells us that to harm an unborn was looked upon the same as harming an already born child. The only way the abortionist can change their minds is to accept the first verse of Genesis: "In the beginning God created ..." and listening to the words of the Creator in Psalm 51, "in sin my mother conceived me." That means that we are sinful human from the moment of conception. God created us, therefore abortion is a horrible sin.

There is never a time when it is right to take that unborn life. To deny them the right to their life would be a crime against humanity. The Bible teaches that the baby who has been conceived and lives in its mother's womb is a living human being, a separate and distinct person from its parents. Therefore, it has just as much right to live as any other human being. To deliberately kill it would be just as wrong as killing any other innocent human being.

The Bible provides the necessary steps to solve the abortion "dilemma" for those who are willing to respect its teachings:

1. Flee fornication.

2. Learn to love, appreciate, and care for the baby.

3. Learn to trust God for the strength to face any hardships life brings. Study His word, pray, and seek help from other Christians.

4. Help others who have needs or problems caused by the birth of a baby.

5. Speak out in defense of life. Seek to deliver those who are about to be slain (Prov. 24:11,12). Do not compromise with sin, but reprove it (Eph. 5:11; 2 Tim. 4:2-4; Prov. 28:4; Gal. 6:1, etc.).

The pro-life position is not something that modern Christians invented after Roe v. Wade. Christians have been pro-life from the beginning. The prochoice position is nothing more than an accommodation to modern secular beliefs, and flies in the face of the Bible and the historical position of the church. If the church is to be the church, it must challenge and guide the morality of society. Is abortion biblical? No. On the contrary, it is an abomination in the sight of God (Psalm 82:3-4, 127:3).

What should a woman do if she has aborted a baby and now realizes she did wrong? She does not need to spend the rest of her life with the burden of unforgiven guilt. The Bible says abortion is wrong, but it also gives something else that humanistic beliefs cannot give: a source of true forgiveness for guilt. God will forgive if we will come to Him according to His conditions.

EL BAUTISMO DE INFANTES

 Ezequiel 18:1-3, 14-17

UNOS ARGUMENTOS AFIRMATIVOS INVESTIGADOS

A. JESÚS BAUTIZO NIÑOS

INFANT BAPTISM

Ezekiel 18:1-3, 14-17

YOU CAN NOT INHERIT THE GUILT OF SIN

One of the biggest mistakes in the religious world is that man is born in sin. Here is the Biblical definition of sin: "Sin is the transgression of the law" (I John 3:4). A newborn has not violated the laws of God. The infant does not know even the laws of God. Since sin is the transgression of the law, it is impossible to inherit.

The Catholic church and others believe and teach that all human beings are born with the guilt of the sin of Adam (original sin) staining their souls. The Catholic Catechism (Editorial Herder, Barcelona, p. 49), says: "Because Adam sinned, as head of humanity, the stain of sin passes all his descendants [original sin is hereditary]" and " In baptism, Christ cleanses us from original sin "(p. 137).

No generation since Adam has escaped the consequences of the sins of its predecessor but the Bible teaches that you cannot inherit the guilt. "Now, lo, if he beget a son, that seeth all his father sins which he has done, and considereth, and doeth not such like, he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live" (18:14-17).

If original sin is inherited, why has not God given a plan for the salvation of infants? In the Bible, there is no mandate for children. The apostle Paul said, "for Where no law is, there is no transgression" (Rom. 4:15).

Jesus said, "Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them" (Matt. 28:19). In Acts 2:38 Peter said, "Repent and be baptized for the remission of sins." The repentant believer is the one to be baptized. This does not include infants, because they do not believe  nor can repent.

JESUS PROCLAIMED THE INNOCENCE OF INFANTS

Jesus said: "Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven" (Matt. 18:3). He also said: "Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto Me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven" (Matt. 19:14). Does this verse teach infant baptism? Certainly, this is the allegation of those who hold this view; but it is significant here that Christ did not say that little children were "in the kingdom," but that "to such belongs the kingdom"! There is a world of difference. The emphasis is upon child-like behavior and character. So Jesus used children to illustrate the purity and innocence of them and does not speak of them as sinners. Children are examples of what converted people should be like.

Let's make these observations:

1. They brought children to Jesus for a blessing.

2. The disciples rebuked the people (v-13). It would be very strange if the disciples scolded the parents for bring their sinner children to Jesus to be baptized. Rather, the disciples would have rejoiced.

No, these children were not sinners and they were not baptized. The infant is as pure at birth as Adam was  when  he was created.

EACH PERSON IS RESPONSIBLE FOR HIS OWN SINS

The Lord said, " What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge? As I live, saith the Lord God, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel."(v 2-3). And in verse 20: "The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him. " If the children were not to blame for the sins of their parents under the law of Moses, now more so under the law of Christ. If the doctrine of inbred sin was true, would it not have a broken link?, however, this passage would be a broken link in the chain. Note: it is the soul that sins that shall die. When we are all standing before God to be judged, every one of us shall give account of our lives (Rom. 14:12).

INFANT BAPTISM IS NOT TAUGHT IN THE BIBLE

The unscriptural teaching of original sin, has produced the unscriptural practice of infant baptism. The Bible is our only guide in all matters of doctrine (II Tim. 3:16-17). There is not a single passage that commands the baptism of infants. There is not a single example in the Bible of an infant baptism. There is not a single argument in favor of infant baptism that can override the test of Scripture.

Martin Luther said, "You cannot prove from the Scriptures that infant baptism was instituted by Jesus, or that was begun by the first Christians after the apostles" (Vanity of the Infant Baptism, II, p.8).

THE BEGINNING OF INFANT BAPTISM

Origen was the first writer in ecclesiastical history that specifically taught infant baptism. He founded their arguments on two false assumptions:

1. That there is something sinful about physical birth (later it was called "original sin").

2. That infant baptism removes that sin.

Many who are in favor of infant baptism today base their beliefs on the same false assumptions. The doctrine of original sin is the foundation of the doctrine of infant baptism. Some who once taught the doctrine of original sin do not believe in it now, but still believe and practice infant baptism. That's like trying to hold the house up after removing the foundation. We can safely conclude that before the year 175, the baptism of infants was an unknown practice.

AFFIRMATIVE ARGUMENTS ABOUT INVESTIGATED

A. JESUS BAPTIZED CHILDREN

Some say that when Jesus said, "Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me" (Matt. 19:14),  He baptized the children that were brought to Him. Let us make the following observations:

1. Jesus did not speak of baptism in this passage.

2. Jesus did what the parents wanted Him to do, put his hands on them (v. 13-15).

3. The disciples would not have rebuked the parents if they had brought their sinner children to the Lord that they might be saved.

We know that Jesus did not baptize these children because Jesus did not baptize anybody. " Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples" (John 4:2). But if blessed.

B. INFANTS ARE A PART OF ALL NATIONS

Some say that infants are a part of all nations and therefore should be baptized. Jesus said, "... make disciples ... baptizing them" (Matt. 28:19). You cannot teach infants. Furthermore, Jesus also said, "He that believeth and is baptized ... (Mark 16:16). Infants cannot be taught, cannot believe, cannot repent and therefore cannot be baptized.

C. WHOLE FAMILY BAPTISM

It is presumed that there were infants in the whole families that were baptized by the apostles. There was never any mention of one infant in the many examples of conversion in the New Testament. In fact it is clear that no infant was baptized.

In the family of Lydia (Acts 16:14-15), only those who were able to take comfort from the words of Paul were baptized (v.40). It is not sure if Lydia was married, nor had children, and that these, if they had such were infants.

At the home of the jailer (Acts 16:32-34), those who heard the gospel and believed, were baptized. This excludes infants because they cannot understand or believe the gospel.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH BAPTIZING AN INFANT?

There is no neotestamental authority for the baptism of an infant. God's plan is believing (Mark 16:16), repent and be baptized for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38). If they were baptized as infants this would upset the order of salvation.

Infant Baptism deprives the child the personal joy to obey the Word of God when they reach the age when they can believe. The infant is baptized without faith, without desire, without repentance, without confession, without love, without hope, without divine authority, without Biblical example and without permission.

Christ came to be the author of salvation to all who obey him (Heb. 5:9). Many refuse to obey the Word of God by not being baptized, saying, "My parents took care of all that when I was an infant."

God does not authorize infant baptism, and this practice almost always prevents the obedience of the  person later.

Infant baptism does not fit the Biblical definition of baptism or the Biblical method of baptism. If parents wish to dedicate their child to Christ, then a baby dedication service is entirely appropriate. However, even if infants are dedicated to the Lord, when they grow up they will still have to make a personal decision to get baptized in order to be saved.
