THE HIDDEN FACE OF HALLOWEEN

"And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them." (Ephesians 5:11)

The Bible does not mention Halloween. However, both the ancient origins of Halloween and its modern customs show it to be a celebration based on false beliefs about the dead and invisible spirits, or demons. The Word of God warns: “There must never be anyone among you who . . . consults ghosts or spirits, or calls up the dead” (Deuteronomy 18:10-12).

While some view Halloween as harmless fun, the Bible indicates that the practices associated with it are not. The Word of God says: “I do not want you to be participants with demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too" (I Corinthians 10:20-21)

“Halloween,” explains the Encyclopedia of American Folklore, “is integrally related to the prospect of contact with spiritual forces, many of which threaten  or frighten.” Likewise, many celebrations like Halloween have pagan origins and are deeply rooted in ancestor worship. Even today, people around the world use these days to make contact with supposed spirits of the dead.

Although Halloween has been viewed mainly as an American holiday, each year people in more and more countries have been adopting it. Many newcomers to the celebration, however, are unaware of the pagan origins of Halloween symbols, decorations, and customs, most of which are related to supernatural beings and occult forces.

Thousands of Wiccans, who follow ancient Celtic rituals, still call Halloween by the ancient name Samhain and consider it to be the most sacred night of the year. “Christians ‘don’t realize it, but they’re celebrating our holiday with us. . . . We like it,’” stated the newspaper USA Today when quoting a professed witch.

Celebrations like Halloween are in conflict with Bible teachings. The Bible warns: “There must never be anyone among you who . . . practices divination, who is soothsayer, augur or sorcerer, who uses charms, consults ghosts or spirits, or calls up the dead.”—Deuteronomy 18:10, 11, Leviticus 19:31; Galatians 5:19-21.

HALLOWEEN HISTORY AND CUSTOMS

SAMHAIN

The origin of Halloween can be traced to this “ancient pagan festival celebrated by Celtic people over 2,000 years ago,” states The World Book Encyclopedia. “The Celts believed that the dead could walk among the living at this time. During Samhain, the living could visit with the dead.” However, the Bible clearly teaches that the dead “are conscious of nothing at all.” (Ecclesiastes 9:5) Thus, they cannot contact the living.

HALLOWEEN COSTUMES, CANDY, AND TRICK OR TREAT

According to the book Halloween—An American Holiday, An American History, some of the Celts wore ghoulish costumes so that wandering spirits would mistake them for one of their own and leave them alone. Others offered sweets to the spirits to appease them. In medieval Europe, the Catholic clergy adopted local pagan customs and had their adherents go from house to house wearing costumes and requesting small gifts. The Bible, on the other hand, does not permit merging false religious practices with the worship of God (II Corinthians 6:17).

GHOSTS, VAMPIRES, WEREWOLVES, WITCHES, AND ZOMBIES

These have long been associated with the evil spirit world. (Halloween Trivia) The Bible clearly states that we should oppose wicked spirit forces, not celebrate with them (Ephesians 6:12).

HALLOWEEN PUMPKINS, OR JACK-O’-LANTERNS

In medieval Britain, “supplicants moved from door to door asking for food in return for a prayer for the dead,” and they would carry “hollowed-out turnip lanterns, whose candle connoted a soul trapped in purgatory.” (Halloween—From Pagan Ritual to Party Night) Others say that the lanterns were used to ward off evil spirits. During the 1800’s in North America, pumpkins replaced turnips because they were plentiful as well as easy to hollow out and carve. The beliefs behind this custom—the immortality of the soul, purgatory, and prayers for the dead—are not based on the Bible (Ezekiel 18:4).

In view of the foregoing, it is wise for you to know about the dark origins of Halloween and similar celebrations. Having this fuller understanding may move you to not participate in these holidays.

ACEPTAR LA MEDIOCRIDAD O EL STATUS QUO ES MORIR

“Mira que te mando que te esfuerces y seas valiente; no temas ni desmayes, porque Jehová tu Dios estará contigo en dondequiera que vayas.” Josué 1:9

“Ruego a los ancianos que están entre vosotros, yo anciano también con ellos, y testigo de los padecimientos de Cristo, que soy también participante de la gloria que será revelada: Apacentad la grey de Dios que está entre vosotros, cuidando de ella, no por fuerza, sino voluntariamente; no por ganancia deshonesta, sino con ánimo pronto; no como teniendo señorío sobre los que están a vuestro cuidado, sino siendo ejemplos de la grey. Y cuando aparezca el Príncipe de los pastores, vosotros recibiréis la corona incorruptible de gloria.” I Pedro 5:1-4

El miedo puede, e impedí a muchos líderes buenos de convertirse en grandes líderes. Muchos escaladores de montaña han permanecido en el campamento base del Monte Everest, sin embargo, sólo un pequeño porcentaje de ellos han tenido el valor que se necesita para realmente  subir a la cima de esa montaña. El miedo a lo desconocido. El miedo de lo que la gente dirá si fracasamos. El miedo de la crítica a lo largo del camino. El miedo de ser el único que dice “si se puede hacer.” Miedo de nuestra visión rechazada por otros. El miedo puede matar a nuestra directiva dada por Dios. Esto puede asfixiar nuestro sueño.

Una posición o un título no hacen a una persona un líder un día para otro. Aunque una persona sea elegida para pastorear una iglesia, ellos no son realmente un líder hasta que ellos enfrentan sus temores y realmente conduzcan a la congregación que Dios ha puesto en sus manos a donde El quiere que vaya. Ser elegido para dirigir es fácil. En realidad dirigir es difícil.

¿Qué define a un visionario verdadero? ¿Es alguien que tiene muchas grandes ideas? ¿Alguien que ve la necesidad del cambio, pero nunca hace que aquel cambio ocurra? Si usted está incapaz o no quiere causar el cambio, no diga nada. Aunque usted pueda ver la necesidad de cambio, no diga nada, a menos que sea para provocar una visión en otra persona que es capaz de crear el cambio necesario.

Cuando usted vea a otro ministro o ministerio que es exitoso, ir con ellos y averigüe cómo y por qué están teniendo éxito. Esfuércese por aprender de ellos. Usted encontrará por lo general que la razón porque ellos están teniendo el éxito es debida a algo que usted sintió que el Espíritu Santo le había hablado de ello en el pasado. Usted podría realizar que Dios le había dicho que hiciera esta misma cosa en el pasado, sólo que usted careció del valor para lanzarse a ello. Hay que admitir que algunas de las más exitosas personas alrededor de usted están haciendo cosas que usted mismo ha considerado, sólo ellos lo hicieron y usted no lo hizo.

Nuestra tentación es demasiado a menudo aceptar el status quo. Nos medimos por nosotros mismos. Determinamos que, puesto que hemos aumentado en algunos puntos porcentuales, estamos teniendo éxito. Sin embargo realmente necesitamos que comenzar a medirnos en los estándares de Dios. ¿Ve él una iglesia de 75 como un éxito cuando se encuentra en medio de una población de 10,000 almas? Ahora si aquella iglesia tiene menos de 3 años, esto es realmente un éxito, pero, si aquella iglesia tiene 20 años o más, esto es otro cuento.

El status quo es seguro. Es cómodo. La aceptación del status quo sin embargo matará una iglesia. Ah, todavía estará allí, pero la visión y el empuje que se necesita para ganar una comunidad, serán para siempre perdidos a menos que usted decida enfrentar a los enemigos del cambio e incluso sus propios temores.  

   

Mira y estudie las iglesias alrededor de usted que están teniendo éxito. Siga los pasos que ellos toman para crear y mantener el éxito que ellos tienen en su ciudad. Una cosa que usted descubrirá consiste en que ningunos dos de ellos están haciendo la misma cosa. Lo que está causando su éxito es que ellos están haciendo cosas que aparecen radicales a aquellos que  cuestionan sus motivos, intenciones, y directivas. Ante la gran crítica desde dentro y desde fuera, cada una de estas iglesias y sus Pastores ha decidido que es mejor luchar y perder que sentarse al margen y no hacer nada.

Para un pastor a aceptar la mediocridad o el status quo es morir. Usted puede estar viviendo en el exterior, pero por dentro estás muerto. Sus días de tener visiones se han terminado. Su capacidad de andar en la oscuridad y saber que la gente está dispuesta a seguirle se ha ido. Usted ya no es un líder. Usted puede tener una posición. Puede ser el jefe, pero usted ya no es un líder de gente. Cuando un pastor encuentra que su capacidad de dirigir ha terminado, es el momento para él pedirle en oración a Dios el valor para enfrentar sus temores.

Moisés, hay un Mar Rojo que le espera a dividirse. Elías, hay un Río Jordán delante de usted. Pedro, siga adelante y sal del barco. David recoge sus piedras, su gigante va a caer. Juan, aunque ellos le hayan hervido en aceite y le hayan enviado para morir en Patmos, Dios ahora tiene un libro que Él quiere que usted escriba.

Pastor, su congregación le seguirá si sale audazmente en la fe y hace todo lo que Dios le dice que haga. Interiormente están esperando que los dirijas. ¡Aquel matón de la iglesia realmente le está diciendo, “Pastor, dirígeme!      

ACCEPTING MEDIOCRITY OR THE STATUS QUO IS TO DIE

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

“To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed. Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.” I Peter 5:1-4

Fear can and will keep many good leaders from becoming great leaders. Many mountain climbers have stood at the base camp of Mt. Everest, yet only a small percentage of them have had the courage it takes to actually climb to the top of that mountain. Fear of the unknown. Fear of what people will say if we fail. Fear of the criticism along the way. Fear of being the only one saying “It can be done.” Fear of our vision being rejected by others. Fear can kill our God given directive. It can suffocate our dream.

A position or a title does not make a person a leader overnight. Though a person is chosen to Pastor a church, they are not truly a leader until they face their fears and actually lead the congregation that God has placed in his hands to where God wants it to go. Being chosen to lead is easy. Actually leading is hard.

What defines a true visionary? Is it someone who has a lot of great ideas? Someone who sees the need for change, but never causes that change to take place? If you are unable or unwilling to cause change, don’t say anything. Although you may see a need for change, don’t say anything, unless it is to spark a vision in another person who is capable of creating the needed change.

When you see another minister or ministry that is successful, go to them and find out how and why they are having success. Strive to learn from them. You will usually find that the reason they are having success due to something you felt the Holy Spirit speaking to you about in the past. You might realize that God told you to do this same thing in the past, only you lacked the courage to launch into it. You must admit that some of the more successful people around you are doing things that you yourself have considered, only they did it and you didn’t.

Our temptation is all too often to accept the status quo. We measure ourselves by ourselves. We determine that since we have increased by some percentage point, we are being successful. However we really need to begin measuring ourselves by God’s standards. Does He view a church of 75 as a success when it sits in the middle of a 10,000 soul populace? Now if that church is less than 3 years old, it is truly a success but, if that church is 20 years or older, that’s another story.

The status quo is safe. It’s comfortable. Accepting the status quo however will kill a church. Oh, it will still be there, but the vision and drive that it takes to win a community, will be forever lost unless you decide to face the enemies of change and even your own fears.

Watch and study churches around you that are having success. Follow the steps they are taking to create and maintain the success they are having in their city. One thing you will discover is that no two of them are doing the same thing. What’s causing their success is that they are doing things that appear radical to those who question their motives, intents, and directives. In the face of great criticism from within and without, every one of these churches and their Pastor’s have decided it is better to fight and lose than sit on the sidelines and do nothing.

For a pastor to accept mediocrity or the status quo is to die. You may be living on the outside, but on the inside you are dead. You vision casting days are over. You ability to walk into the darkness and know that people are willing to follow you is gone. You are no longer a leader. You may have a position. You may be the boss, but you are no longer a leader of people. When a pastor finds that his ability to lead is over, it is time for him to prayerfully ask God for the courage to face his fears.

Moses, there is a Red sea waiting for you to split. Elijah, there is a Jordan River in front of you. Peter, go ahead and step out of the boat. David gather up your stones, your giant is going to fall. John, though they’ve boiled you in oil and sent you to die on Patmos, God now has a book he wants you to write.

Pastor, your congregation will follow you if you boldly step out in faith and do all that God is telling you to do. They are inwardly waiting for you to lead them. That church bully is really saying to you, “Pastor lead me!

OBSCUR PERO SIGNIFICANTE

Juan 1:35-42

A menudo tenemos la idea equivocada que sólo los trabajadores visibles en el obra del Señor son dignos de consideración. No debemos pasar por alto la contribución de los partidarios leales que trabajan por el señor en obscuro y áreas menos visibles del reino de Dios. Algunos de los más grandes obreros en el reino son case siempre poco conocidos y pasados por alto. Aún el trabajo que ellos desempeñan es mucho como el condimento en una comida buena. Andrés, un discípulo de Jesús, era tal persona.

           

ANDRÉS FUE UNO DE LOS PRIMEROS DISCÍPULOS DE JESÚS

El día después que Juan el Bautista hizo su primer anuncio público de Jesús, sus discípulos empezaron a buscar a Jesús. Los primeros dos discípulos en seguir a Jesús fueron Andrés y su amigo Juan, el hermano de Jacobo. Cuando ellos encontraron a Jesús, le preguntaron, “¿Dónde moras? Ellos probablemente pensaron que sería bueno saber más de Él.

Jesús invitó estos dos discípulos de Juan que pasaran la tarde con Él, excediendo sus expectativas. Así, de aproximadamente las cuatro de la tarde pasaron la tarde conociendo más de Él. Ellos se convencieron que el anuncio de Juan de Jesús que era el Cristo era verdad. Se sintieron obligados decirles a sus hermanos de su descubrimiento del Cristo y llevarlos a Él.

ANDRES INTRODUJO A OTROS A JESÚS

Andrés se menciona solo seis veces por nombre en el Nuevo Testamento. Hasta ahora estamos endeudados a este discípulo, que fue poco conocido,  por ser el instrumento que trajo a Jesús a su hermano, Pedro, quien fue muy conocido después. ¡Qué grande campo misionero proveen nuestras familias! Andrés no se apresuró a ir a otro campo de labor. Su primer testimonio se dio a esos de su casa.

En una ocasión cuando una multitud le había seguido Jesús probó la fe de Felipe cuando le preguntó, “¿De dónde compraremos pan para que coman éstos? (Jn. 6:5). Felipe, la persona práctica que él era, considero la situación y sin fe para una solución contestó, “Doscientos denarios de pan no bastarían para que cada uno de ellos tomase un poco.” Los discípulos le sugirieron a Jesús despidelos porque era ya tarde. Jesús dijo: “Dadles vosotros de comer.”(Mar. 6:37). Los discípulos fallaron la misma prueba de fe que Felipe había fallado. Ellos preguntaron, “¿Que vayamos y compremos...y les demos de comer?”

Andrés trajo a un joven y su almuerzo de cinco panes de cebada y dos pececillos a Jesús. Él dijo, “¿qué es esto para tantos? (Jn. 6:9). La pregunta escéptica de Andrés fue tocada por un poco indicio de fe. ¿Para qué se hubiera  molestado Andrés en traer el almuerzo pequeño a Jesús si no pensó que Jesús haría algo con él? Jesús actuó en la sugerencia de Andrés en seguida.

Es sorprendente ver lo que Jesús puede hacer con nuestros recursos limitados y poca fe. Comienza con lo que tenemos y lo bendice para que puede llegar a ser suficiente para lo que necesitamos. Debemos seguir el ejemplo de Andrés y traer a Jesús lo pequeño que tenemos para que Él lo multiplique.

Un día un grupo de Griegos vinieron con Felipe y le dijeron que ellos deseaban hablar con Jesús. Felipe consultó con Andrés y ambos le trajeron el mensaje a Jesús.

Dios estaba para maldecir a Israel por rechazar su Mesías. Jesús hizo lugar para los gentiles en la corte exterior al consternación de los comerciantes, pero pronto se haría lugar para los gentiles en la iglesia por la muerte de Cristo en el Calvario. Cuando Andrés y Felipe trajeron la petición de los Griegos a Jesús, abrieron la puerta para Él para enseñar en propósito verdadero de Su muerte (Jn. 12:23-36).

ANDRÉS ERA OBSCURO PERO NO INSIGNIFICANTE

Alguien que es obscuro puede definirse como no bien conocido o no famoso. Andrés, a comparación a su hermano, Pedro, no era muy bien conocido o famoso. Pero, Aún su vida era significante y lleno de propósito y importancia.

Jesús tenía un círculo interno dentro de Su grupo de apóstoles. Pedro, Jacobo y Juan estaban con Él cuando levantó la hija de Jairo, en la transfiguración y durante la oración agónica de Jesús en el Getsemaní.  Estos tres hombres compartieron un lugar especial de cercanía con Jesús durante varios eventos importantes mientras Andrés y los otros estaban fuera del círculo interior.

El hermano mayor de Andrés, Pedro, quien él había traído a Cristo siguió ministrando y llegó a ser muy bien conocido en la iglesia. Su experiencia era similar al de un maestro cuyo estudiante sube a más gran aclamación que el que lo enseñó.  O, es como un hermano más joven cuyo sólo identidad pública es su relación a su hermano mayor. Andrés fue sosegadamente inadvertido mientras Pedro audazmente construyó una reputación de grandes reconocimientos de fe.

Andrés no recibió aclamación. No hay ningún registro bíblico de un sermón que él predicó o escritura sagrada escrita por él. Jesús no lo reconoció por servicio meritorio o le encomienda por gran carácter. Pero esto no quiere decir que él faltaba grandeza o era indigno de tal recomendación. Más bien, él pareció ser grande en una manera modesta. ¡De hecho, la ausencia de un clamor por atención o crédito personal es marcas de su grandeza y todavía son características de ser grandemente deseadas!

Miriam, la hermana de Moisés fue tal persona. Ella es mencionar muy brevemente es la Biblia, pero Dios la usó para que ella fuera el instrumento que Él utiliza para asegurarse que la madre de Moisés fue elegida para hacerse cargo de moisés.

Andrés ejemplifica el concepto que Jesús enseñó que, “los primeros serán postreros.” Aunque Andrés fue el primer discípulo él no estaba en el primer plano de liderazgo. Andrés estaba satisfecho en permanecer obscurecido. Él no hizo ningún esfuerzo para estar adelante de los otros apóstoles para recibir atención. Jacobo y Juan le pidieron a Jesús por posiciones de prominencia en el reino venidero, pero Andrés no fue así.

Aparentemente, no había envidia en el corazón de Andrés hacia el portavoz popular apostólico y líder, su hermano. Él mostró la esencia pura de amor verdadero que, “no tiene envidia”. Ningún celo perverso corrompió el corazón de Andrés.

Personas pequeñas reducen el nombre de otros y tijeretean a los talones de esos que suben más allá que ellos. Pocas son los individuos que son capaces de amar, dirigir y entonces estar a un lado para  animar mientras otros parecen pasarlos.

HAY UNA GRAN NECESIDAD DE PERSONAS DE APOYO EN EL TRABAJO DE  DIOS

“Además, el cuerpo (la iglesia) no es un solo miembro, sino muchos” (I Cor.12:14). Cuando pensamos en la comparación del apóstol Pablo del cuerpo humano y el cuerpo de Cristo, la iglesia, se no recuerda de cuan importantes son las cosas pequeñas. Hay una necesidad por más que sólo el prominente. Pablo hizo la pregunta: “si todo el cuerpo fuese ojo, ¿dónde estaría el oído?” El cuerpo estaría fuera de equilibrio si la cabeza fuera sólo un ojo grande, o orejas, o nariz.

Cada uno de nosotros provee para la iglesia una función necesitada que hemos sido llamados hacer. Alguien tiene que proveer el apoyo detrás las escenas para hacer posible cada actividad en la iglesia. Debemos estar satisfechos hacer nuestra parte en el apoyo de  todos quien están dependiendo en nosotros. Finalmente, Cristo esta confiando en nosotros que hagamos todo lo que Él nos ha llamado y ordenó para hacer.

El valor de las cosas pequeñas en la vida nunca se puede subestimar. Hay muchas pequeñas y aparentemente cosas insignificantes en la vida de los cuales nosotros dependemos completamente. Sabemos que podemos confiar que Jesús siempre es el mismo, ¿pero puede Él depender de nosotros? ¿Estaremos en el lugar donde Él nos ha plantado? Cada líder debe tener un personal dedicado sobre quien él puede depender. Se ha dicho que la más grande capacidad en la vida es la disponibilidad.

Mucho daño puede venir por individuos quien, después de servir con buen éxito en una capacidad secundaria, crecen inquieto y deciden ir a otro lugar donde ellos pueden ser un líder prominente. Tal movimiento impulsivo puede causar confusión y desastre si la persona no ha sido llamado a ese lugar de liderazgo. Es mucho mejor que una persona esté contento en laborar fielmente en cualquier capacidad que Dios lo ha puesto hasta que tal tiempo como Dios escoja moverlo a otra área de servicio.

Seguir en los pasos de Andrés es difícil. El carácter modesto encontrado en Andrés lo puso calladamente en los antecedentes que levantan a otros. Cuando el vino a la prominencia, siempre fue a favor de otro. Trajo a su hermano, Pedro, a Jesús. Trajo un joven y su almuerzo a Jesús. Le trajo la petición de los Griegos a Jesús.

El reino de dios hoy está en necesidad de personas dedicadas quien, como Andrés, sean leal, fiel, y sustentador.     

        

OBSCURE BUT SIGNIFICANT

John 1:35-42

We often have the mistaken idea that only the visible workers  in the work of the Lord are worthy of consideration. We must not overlook the contribution of the steadfast supporters who are working for the Lord in obscure and less visible areas of God’s kingdom. Some of the greatest workers in the kingdom are too often little known and unnoticed. Yet the work they perform is much like the seasoning in good food. Andrew, a disciple of Jesus, was such a person.

ANDREW WAS ONE OF JESUS’ FIRST DISCIPLES

The day after John the Baptist made his first public announcement of Jesus, his disciples began to seek Jesus out. The first two disciples to follow Jesus were Andrew and his friend John, the brother of James. When they found Jesus, they asked Him, “Where dwellest thou?”. They probably thought that it would be good to get to know more about Him.

Jesus invited these two disciples of John to spend the evening with Him, exceeding their expectations. So, from about four o’clock in the afternoon they spent the evening getting to know Jesus. They became convinced that John’s announcement that Jesus was the Christ was true. They were compelled to tell their brothers about their discovery of the Christ and to lead them to Him.

ANDREW INTRODUCED OTHERS TO JESÚS

Andrew is barely noticed by Christian historians and only mentioned six times by name in the N. T. Yet we are indebted to this little known disciple for bringing to Jesus his later well known brother, Peter. What a readymade missionary field our families provide! Andrew did not rush off to another field of labor. His first testimony was given to those at home.

On one occasion when a large crowd had followed Him, Jesus tested the faith of Philip when He asked him, “Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?” (Jn. 6:5). Philip, the practical person that he was, sized up the situation and with no faith for a solution replied, “Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them that every one of them may take a little.” The disciples suggested that Jesus send the multitude away because it was late in the day. Jesus said, “Give ye them to eat” (Mr. 6:3). The disciples failed the same test of faith that Philip had failed. They asked, “Shall we go and buy...and give them to eat?” (Mr. 6:37).

Andrew brought a boy and his lunch of five small barley loaves and two small fish to Jesus. He said, “But what are they among so many?” (Jn. 6:9). Andrew’s skeptical question was touched with just a hint of faith. Why would Andrew have bothered to bring the little lunch to Jesus if he did not think that Jesus would do something with it? Jesus acted upon Andrew’s suggestion at once.

It is amazing to see what Jesus can do with our limited resources and little faith. He starts with what we have and blesses it that it may become sufficient for what we need. We should follow the example of Andrew and bring to Jesus what little we have in order for Him to multiply it.

One day a group of Greeks came to Philip and asked him to arrange for them to meet with Jesus. Philip consulted Andrew and both of them brought word to Jesus.

God was about to curse Israel for rejecting its Messiah. Jesus made room for the Gentiles in the outer court to the dismay of the merchants, but soon room would be made for Gentiles in the church at large by the death of Christ on Calvary. When Andrew and Philip brought the request to Jesus for an interview with the Greeks, they opened the door for Him to teach on the true purpose of His death (Jn. 12:23-36).

ANDREW WAS OBSCURE BUT NOT INSIGNIFICANT

Anyone that is obscure could be defined as not well known or not famous. Andrew, by comparison to his brother, Peter, was not well known or famous. Yet his life was significant and full of meaning and importance.

Jesus had an inner circle within His group of apostles. Peter, James and John were with Him when Jairus’ daughter was raised, at the transfiguration and during Jesus’ agonizing prayer in Gathsemane. These three men shared a special place of closeness with Jesus during several key events while Andrew and  the others were outside of the inner circle.

Andrew’s older brother Peter, whom he had brought to Christ went on to be well known in the church. His experience was similar to that of a teacher whose student rises to greater acclaim than the one who taught him. Or, it was like a younger brother whose only public identity is his relationship to an older brother. Andrew was quietly unobserved as Peter boldly built a reputation of great acknowledgments of faith.

Andrew received no acclaim. There is no biblical record of any sermon that he preached or sacred writing written. Jesus did not recognize him for meritorious service or commend him for great character. But that is not to say that he lacked greatness or was unworthy of such commendation. Rather, he seemed to be great in a quiet unassuming way. Indeed, the absence of a clamor for attention or personal credit are marks of his greatness and still are traits greatly to be desired!

Miriam, Moses's sister was such a person. She is mention very briefly is the bible but God used her to be the instrument that He used to make sure Moses's mother was chosen to take care of moses.

Andrew exemplified the concept Jesus taught that “the first shall be last.” Although Andrew was the first disciple he was not in the foreground of leadership. Andrew was content to remain obscure. He did not make any effort to push ahead of the other apostles for attention. James and John pressed Jesus for positions of prominence in the coming kingdom, but this was not so of Andrew.

Apparently, there was no envy in the heart of Andrew toward the popular apostolic spokesman and leader, his brother. He displayed the pure essence of true love that “envieth not”. No evil jealousy corrupted Andrew’s heart.

Small people drop names and snip at the heels of those who are climbing past them. Few indeed are the individuals who are able to love, lead and then linger on the sidelines to cheer while others seem to pass them by.

THERE IS A GREAT NEED OF SUPPORT PEOPLE IN THE WORK OF GOD

“For the body (the church) is not one member, but many” (I Cor. 12:14).  When we think of the apostle Paul’s comparison of the human body and the body of Christ, the church, we are reminded of how important little things are. There is a need for more than just the prominent. Paul asked the question: “If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing?” The body would be out of balance if the head were only one large eye, or ears, or nose.

Each one of us provides for the church a needed function that we have been called to do. Somebody must provide the behind the scenes support to make possible each activity in the church. We should be content to do our part in support of all who are depending upon us. Ultimately, Christ is counting on us to do all that He has called and ordained for us to do.

The value of small things in life can never be understated. There are many small and seemingly insignificant things in life upon which we depend completely. We know we can count on Jesus always to be the same, but can He depend on us? Will we be in the place where He has planted us? Every leader must have a dedicated staff of people upon whom he can depend. It has been said that the greatest ability in life is availability.

Much harm can come by individuals who, after serving successfully in a secondary capacity, grow restless and decide to go elsewhere where they can be a prominent leader. Such an impulsive move can cause confusion and disaster if the person has not been called to that place of leadership. It is much better that a person be content to labor faithfully in whatever capacity God has placed him until such a time as God would choose to move him into another area of service.

Following in the footsteps of Andrew is challenging. The unassuming character found in Andrew placed him quietly in the background lifting up others. When he came to prominence, it was always on behalf of someone else. He brought his brother, Peter, to Jesus. He brought a lad and his lunch to Jesus. He brought the Greeks’ request to Jesus.

The kingdom of God today is in need of dedicated people who, like Andrew, are loyal, faithful, and supportive.

EL MINISTERIO DE AYUDA

I Corintios 12:28-31; Efesios 4:11-12

Si usted en alguna vez ha sido envuelto en un tipo de ministerio suplementario, usted probablemente ha tenido la oportunidad de  pelear la tentación de quejarse o dejar el trabajo. Si usted permite que la Palabra de Dios ministre a su corazón en esta área, usted será librado.

Dios ha puesto Dones en la Iglesia: apóstoles, profetas, evangelistas, pastores y maestros para perfeccionar a los santos para la obra del ministerio, para la edificación del Cuerpo de Cristo. Pero además de estos hay también los que ayudan. Dios ha puesto ciertos Dones en la Iglesia para cumplir una función primaria: para servir en un papel suplementario. Las ayudas fueron instituido por Dios para hacer precisamente eso. Son ministerios suplementarios. Estos ministerios son para ayudar a la Iglesia crecer. Todo los trabajos tienen que hacerse si la meta de Dios para Su Iglesia se alcanzara. Si usted ha nacido de nuevo usted es parte de la Iglesia.

¿No ha usted en alguna vez deseado saber  lo que es su ministerio al Pueblo de Dios? ¿Tiene deseo de ser parte del movimiento potente de Dios en estos últimos días? Dios en verdad lo ha llamado a un ministerio muy importante, el ministerio de suplementario. Dios ha hecho dos declaraciones en lo que concierne a este  ministerio : 1) Es un Don sobrenatural. 2) Es un Don que Dios ha puesto en la Iglesia como un pilar de concreto para ayudar sostener algo.

¿Si usted está en el ministerio de ayuda, a quién entonces ayudas? Dios ha puesto en la Iglesia un pastor para vigilarla. Su trabajo es ayudar a su pastor correr la iglesia. El ministerio de ayuda actúa como dedos en una mano en asistir al pastor. Dios le ha dado una visión al pastor par Su Iglesia, y Él te ha dado a usted a su pastor para “ayudarle” realizar esa visión. Sin el ministerio de ayuda, las cosas no se harían. Sería como una mano sin dedos.

Cada persona es vital al funcionamiento apropiado de una Iglesia. Todo las personas deben estar de acuerdo y hablar la misma cosa (I Cor. 1:10). Deben operar en amor y siempre creer el mejor el uno del otro. Cuando cada parte funcione adecuadamente, la Iglesia entera opera suavemente (I Cor. 12:14-26).

Hay algunos quien cuando fueron salvos, inmediatamente querían apresurarse en trabajar en un ministerio. Ellos comúnmente presumen que Dios quiere que prediquen. Muy a menudo, ellos se adelantan al plan de Dios, antes que la Palabra de Dios ha renovado sus mentes y saturado sus espíritus. El fracaso es el resultado.

Las personas que están madurando en Cristo exhibirán dos calidades: 1) Ellos edificaran y aumentan el bienestar de la familia de Dios. 2) Ellos aprenderán a ministrar (ayudar o sirven) a otros. Siempre se puede distinguir los hermanos maduros por ver quiénes son los que le ayudan al pastor, y no le estorban.

En una película hay una estrella, una persona principal; pero hay caracteres también suplementarios.  ¿Qué es el trabajo de estos actores suplementarios? Hacer que la persona principal de la película se mire bien y ejecuta a eficiencia máximo. La estrella sería incapaz de lograr su  tarea si no fuera por todo esos envuelto en una capacidad suplementario. Todos tienen una parte que jugar. Sin todo estos caracteres suplementarios la película no podía progresar. ¡Una persona no lo puede hacerlo todo! Lo mismo es cierto con el Evangelio. Dios no llamó a una persona para hacer todo el trabajo él mismo. Dios ha puesto en la Iglesia ciertos ministerios y dones de ministerio para ejecutar trabajos específicos y llevar a cabo tareas específicas.

CÓMO FUNCIONAN LOS MINISTERIOS SUPLEMENTARIOS

En San Mateo 10:1-8,40-41; Jesús envió Sus discípulos para echar fuera demonios, sanar todo tipos de enfermedades, predicar, limpiar los leprosos y levantar a los muertos. Ésta es una parte excitante del ministerio. Ésta es la parte del trabajo del Señor que todo mundo parece querer, pero que pocos parecen haber leído lo que aconteció antes que los discípulos salieron hacer estas cosas.

Estos doce fueron llamados para ser apóstoles, pero no comenzaron en esta manera. Jesús los llamó y los apartó con un propósito específico en mente: Ellos estaban para llevar a cabo el trabajo del Evangelio después qué Él se fuera; pero antes que les dio este poder, la mayoría de su tiempo fue envuelto con lo que muchos hoy consideran trabajo servil. Entonces salieron en el poder de Dios para ministrar; pero cuando volvieron, ellos continuaron haciendo trabajo servil. En todo los Evangelios, los doce discípulos estaban con El Señor constantemente. Ellos hacían preparaciones antes que Jesús ministraba, controlaban las masas de gentío y limpiaban después de las reuniones (Mateo 14:16-20).

Los discípulos operaron en un papel suplementario, en un ministerio suplementario. Ellos habían salido a ministrar la Palabra de Dios y se excitaron sobre ello. Pero cuando volvieron, continuaron haciendo lo qué Dios les había llamado para hacer. Su apoyo, su ayuda, su asistencia ayudó que el ministerio del Señor fluye suavemente. Ellos apoyaron el ministerio en que Dios los había puesto. Ellos se envolvieron  y se excitaron en hacer el trabajo de Dios. aunque su trabajo era servil, ellos eran fieles en hacerlo y todo corrió bien.

Si usted está envuelto en un ministerio, necesita asir la importancia de su trabajo. Usted es parte vital del ministerio que apoya, si es por trabajo físico o con sus oraciones y finanzas. Se necesita todos trabajando juntos para hacer el trabajo. Ninguna persona sola es más importante que otra. Todos tenemos un trabajo para cumplir; es nuestro llamamiento de Dios.

Jesús primero escogió 12 hombres que le siguieran en Su ministerio. Entonces en Lucas 10:1, Él eligió otros setenta hombres. Después que Judas lo traicionó, tenía que ser reemplazado (Hechos 1:15-26). Los apóstoles buscaron de entre los setenta para escoger un reemplazo.

Matías era uno de los setenta que Jesús había llamado pero no estaba en los empleados ministeriales o en el cuerpo docente; era sólo un miembro de la congregación. Pero Dios conoció su corazón. Matías se envolvió en cualquiera cosa que había para hacer y se excitó en él porqué servía a Dios. Dios conoció su corazón y lo enalteció desde la posición de discípulo a el de apóstol. Matías no andaba buscando ser exaltado, pero porque estaba envuelto en lo que Dios estaba haciendo, Dios lo escogió y lo exalto.

¡Envuelves y haga lo qué hay que hacer; Dios lo exaltará! Un ejemplo de un ministerio suplementario es los siete hombres que fueron escogidos en Hechos 6:1-6. La Biblia está llena de ejemplos de ministerios suplementarios. Felipe comenzó como un ayudante y Dios lo exaltó al ministerio de un evangelista. En Hechos 13, leemos de Bernabé y Pablo. Eran maestros y profetas en la Iglesia de Antioquía; entonces Dios los promocionó al ministerio de apóstoles. En Hechos 14, vemos que Pablo había llegado a ser el orador principal. Esto no molestó a Bernabé, él había visto su potencial y le ayudó a Pablo desarrollar su ministerio. En todo la Biblia encontramos otros ministerios suplementarios: Silas, Tito,  Priscila y Aquila, Timoteo, Filemón, Lucas y otros que ayudaron apoyar el trabajo de Dios con su tiempo y su sustancia.

ENCONTRANDO SU LUGAR EN EL CUERPO

En Proverbios 18:16, leímos, “La dádiva del hombre le ensancha el camino y le lleva delante de los grandes.” Si usted es llamado de Dios, su don hará lugar para usted. Su responsabilidad ahora es ayudar en cualquier capacidad que puede, y dejar que Dios lo exalta. Personas que fueron usadas por Dios y fueron exaltados en ministerios prominentes no comenzaron allí. Comenzaron haciendo lo que estaba a la mano; entonces Dios los enalteció.

El elemento más importante a su éxito en cualquier ministerio es saber sin ninguna duda que Dios lo ha llamado. No importa a que ha sido llamado hacer, si es a predicar o a barrer el templo, debe darse cuenta que usted fue llamado de Dios.

Muchas personas piensan que para ser llamado de Dios,  tienen que estar en el ministerio completamente u ocupar un funcionario de ministerio tal como el de pastor o evangelista. Esto no es cierto. Usted es llamado de Dios para apoyar Su Obra con sus oraciones, sus diezmos y ofrendas, su tiempo y sus talentos. Si no cumple usted con su responsabilidad, la Obra de Dios sufrirá. Hay unas personas que piensan que a menos que ellos estén en el frente de todos, ellos son inútil a Dios. ¡Esto es una mentira del diablo! Hay un lugar en el Cuerpo de Cristo para cada uno de nosotros.

Aquí están unos pasos que le ayudarán encontrar su lugar en el Cuerpo de Cristo:

1. RÉALISÉ QUE ERES LLAMADO DE DIOS.

    ¡Si es uno de ser un intercesor en oración o uno que financieramente apoya la Obra de Dios, usted es llamado!

2. HAGA LA DECISIÓN DE CUMPLIR CON LA POSICIÓN EN QUE DIOS LE HA LLAMADO.

      Deje que Dios lo promueve; y no se promueve usted mismo.

3. TODO LO QUE SU MANO ENCUENTRA PARA HACER, HAZLO.  (Eclesiastés 9:10)

  ¡No a medias, pero con todo sus fuerzas! (Col. 3:23-24). Mateo 20:6; “Muchos son llamados, mas pocos escogidos.” No es suficiente ser llamado, cuando ha sido llamado, tiene que envolverse y hacer algo. Envuélvase; entonces se escogerá. Hay algunos que han sido llamados, pero no fueron fiel lo suficiente para ser escogidos. Cuando esto sucede, ellos siempre culpan a Dios cuando en verdad es su propia falla.

4. NO INTENTE DE ANDAR EN EL LLAMAMIENTO DE OTRA PERSONA.

Si usted hace esto sólo lo llevará a la frustración y lo sacará de la voluntad de Dios. Usted tiene que dejar que Dios lo use como Él quiere, con sus propias características personales. Es Dios quien lo llama; no se llama a usted mismo. Usted tendrá éxito si usted es su propia persona. No trate de copiar a alguien más.

THE MINISTRY OF HELPS

I Corinthians 12:28-31; Ephesians 4:11-12

If you have ever been involved in a supportive type of ministry, you have probably had the opportunity to fight off the temptation to quit or complain. If you will allow God’s Word to minister to your heart in this area, you will be liberated.

God has set gifts in the Church: apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers for the perfecting of the saints for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ. But in addition to these there is also helps. God has set certain gifts in the Church to fulfill one primary function: to serve in a supportive role. Helps was instituted by God to do just that. They are supportive ministries. These ministries are to help the Church grow. All the jobs have to be done if God’s goal for His Church is to be reached. If you are born again you are part of the Church.

Have you ever wondered what your ministry to God’s people is? Do you have a desire to be part of God’s mighty move in these last days? God has indeed called you to a very important ministry, the ministry of helps. God has made two statements concerning the helps ministry: 1) It is a supernatural gift. 2) It is a gift God has set in the Church like a concrete pillar to help hold things up.

If you are in the helps ministry, who then do you help? God has set in the Church a pastor to oversee it. Your job is to help your pastor run the church. The helps ministry acts like fingers on a hand in assisting the pastor. God gives the pastor a vision for his church, and He has given you to your pastor to “help” bring that vision to pass.  Without the helps ministry, things won’t get done. It would be like a hand without fingers.

Every person is vital to the proper functioning of a Church. All of the persons must be in agreement and speak the same thing (I Cor. 1:10). They must operate in love and always believe the best about one another. When each part functions properly, the whole church operates smoothly (I Cor. 12: 14-26).

There are many brothers who when they were first saved, immediately wanted to rush out into a ministry. They usually assume God wants them to preach. Very often, they move out ahead of God, before the Word has renewed their minds and saturated their spirits. Failure is the result. 

Brothers who are growing up in Christ will exhibit two qualities: 1) They will build up and add to the welfare of God’s family. 2) They will learn to minister (help or serve) to others.  You can always tell the mature brothers by watching those who help the pastor, not hinder him. 

In a movie, there is a star, a leading person; but there are also supporting characters. What is the job of these supporting actors? To make the star of the move look good and perform at maximum efficiency. The star would be unable to accomplish his or her task if it were not for all those involved in a supportive capacity. Everyone has a part to play. Without all these supporting characters, the move could not progress. One person can’t do it all! The same is true with the Gospel. God did not call one person to do all the work himself. God has set in the Church certain ministries and ministry gifts to perform specific jobs and to carry out specific tasks.

HOW HELPS MINISTRIES FUNCTION

In Matthew 10:1-8,40-41; Jesus sent out His disciples to cast out demons, heal all kinds of sickness and disease, preach, cleanse the lepers and raise the dead. This is an exciting part of ministry. This is the part of God’s work that everyone seems to want, but few seem to have read what took place before the disciples went out to do these things.

These twelve were called to be apostles, but they did not start out that way. Jesus called them and set them apart with one specific purpose in mind: They were to carry out the work of the Gospel after He left; but before He gave them this power, the majority of their time was taken up with what many today would consider menial work.  Then they went out in the power of God to minister; but when they returned, they continued doing menial work. Throughout the Gospels, the twelve disciples were with the Lord constantly. They made preparations before Jesus ministered, controlling the people and cleaned up after the meetings were over (Matthew 14:16-20).

The disciples operated in a supportive role, in a supportive ministry. They had gone out and ministered the Word and they were excited about it. But when they returned, they continued to do what God had called them to do. Their support, their aid, their assistance helped the Lord’s ministry flow smoothly. They supported the ministry God had placed them in. They got involved and were excited about doing God’s work. Though their work was menial, they were faithful to do it and everything ran like clockwork.

If you are involved in a ministry, you need to grasp the importance of your job. You are a vital part of the ministry you support, whether it be by actual physical work or with your prayers and finances. It takes all working together to get the job done. No one person is more important than another. All of us have a job to fulfill; it is our calling from God.

Jesus first chose 12 men to follow Him and work with Him in His ministry. Then in Luke 10:1, he appointed seventy others. After Judas betrayed Him, he had to be replaced (Acts 1:15-26). The apostles looked among the seventy to chose a replacement.

Matthias was one of the seventy that Jesus had called but he was not on the ministerial staff or on the teaching staff; he was just a member of the congregation. But, God knew his heart. Matthias was involved in anything there was to do and was excited about it because he was serving God. God knew his heart and exalted him from the position of disciple to that of apostle. Matthias was not looking to be exalted, but because he was involved in what God was doing, God chose him and exalted him.

Get involved and do what there is to do; God will exalt you! An example of a supportive ministry is the seven men who were chosen in Acts 6:1-6.  The Bible is full of examples of supportive ministries. Philip started as a helper and God exalted him to the ministry of an evangelist. In Acts 13, we read about Barnabas and Paul. They were teachers and prophets in the church at Antioch; then God promoted them to the ministry of apostles. In Acts 14, we see that Paul had become the chief speaker. It didn’t bother Barnabas, he had seen his potential and helped Paul develop his ministry. Throughout the Bible we find other supportive ministers: Silas, Titus, Aquila and Priscilla, Philemon, Timothy, Luke and others who helped support the work of God with their time and their substance.

FINDING YOUR PLACE IN THE BODY

In Proverbs 18:16, we read, “A man’s gift makes room for him, and brings him before great men.” If you are called of God, your gift will make room for you. Your responsibility now is to help out in any capacity you can, and let God exalt you. People that were used of God and were exalted into prominent ministries did not start there. They began by doing what was at hand; then God exalted them.

The most important  element to your success in any ministry is to know beyond a shadow of doubt that you are called of God. No matter what you are called to do, whether it is to preach or to be a maintenance man, you must realize that you are called of God.

Many brothers think that to be called of God, they must be in full-time ministry or occupy an officer of ministry such as pastor or evangelist. That is not true. You are called of God to support the work of God with your prayers, your tithes and offerings, your time, and your talents. If you do not fulfill your responsibility, the work of God will suffer. There are some Brothers who think that unless they are in the front of everyone, they are useless to God. That is a lie from the devil! There is a place in the Body of Christ for each of us.

Here are some steps that will help you find your place in the Body of Christ:

1. REALIZE YOU ARE CALLED OF GOD.

Whether you are a prayer intercessor or one who financially supports the work of God, you are called!

2. MAKE A DECISION TO FULFILL THE POSITION GOD HAS CALLED YOU TO.

Let God promote you; don’t promote yourself.

3. WHATEVER YOUR HAND FINDS TO DO, DO IT (Ecclesiastes 9:10).

Not half-heartedly, with all your might! (Col. 3:23-24).  Matthew 20:16 says, “Many are called, but few are chosen.” It is not enough to be called. Once you are called, you have to get involved and start doing.

Become involved; then you will be chosen. There are some brothers who are called, but they are not faithful long enough to be chosen.  When this happens, brothers always blame God when it was is their own fault.

4. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO WALK IN ANOTHER PERSON’S CALLING

If you do this it will only lead to frustration and take you out of the will of God. You must allow God to use you as He wants, with your own personality traits. It is God that calls you; you do not call yourself. You will have success if you just be yourself. Don’t try to copy someone else.
