PRAYER CHANGES THINGS

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)

When it comes to trials and difficult times, many people often tend to throw in the towel before they even go to God in prayer. Prayer is intimate communication with God. For many, the extent of their prayer life is at the dinner table or before they go to bed. The devil doesn’t mind those types of prayers because they go nowhere.

If we want to experience something powerful and new in our lives it will come through prayer. The powerful fervent prayer of a righteous man can do much. Prayer is not measured by its length; it is measured by its depth.  It has been said that faith moves mountains, but prayer moves God. Isn't it amazing that our prayers, whether grand and glorious or feeble and faint, can move the heart of God who created the universe?

What kind of person has an effective prayer? A righteous man, (a lover of God); if you want your prayers to be effective, you must first be a lover of God. What good will your prayer be on Sunday, if you go out and live your life the way you want to during the week? Effective prayer changes your character. You no longer desire to do the things you used to do. You no longer want to satisfy your desires (Prov. 15:29). If you live your life to please God, then God will make every effort to please you.

Our understanding is limited to our vision. But when our understanding becomes God's understanding, our vision is expanded. We see things differently. Not by our own eyes, but through His eyes. Prayer changes our vision. We no longer think like ourselves, but rather, we have the mind of Christ.

We can read books and get counseling to correct our spiritual vision, but nothing works like prayer. Our vision is limited. But when we close our eyes and pray, we see things through God's eyes. When we don't pray, our vision stays narrow, and we stay in our limited perspective. The best vision we can have is when we close our eyes and pray. When we close our eyes, we take on the mind of Christ, and our vision is multiplied.

If I were to ask the question, "How many of you believe that you need to spend more time in prayer?” Everyone would raise their hand. If we know that we need to increase our prayer efforts, then why do so few of us actually do it?  What is the problem? We want to pray, but we don’t plan to pray.  The saint who wages war against the devil fights best on his knees.

MATURING IN PRAYER

SEEKING THE HAND OF GOD: (Praying only because of needs) John 6:2, 26

The lowest form of communication with God is praying only because of a personal need. This is considered "seeking the hand of God." During the earthly ministry of Jesus, multitudes of people sought out and followed Him, but very few of them were interested in committing their lives to Him in real discipleship (vv. 60, 66-68). To them, Jesus was not more than someone who could satisfy their needs. He could heal their sick bodies when they needed healing. He could give them food when they were hungry. Only a very few ever thought of Jesus as someone they could enjoy fellowship with, and who desires fellowship in return. Most believers unfortunately are living on this level of a relationship with Jesus. Their prayer life is almost non-existence until a serious problem arises. Then they know right where to go.

SWEET HOUR OF PRAYER: (Survival Prayer) Matthew 26:40-41

The very minimum every Christian should pray to live a victorious life is at least one hour a day. That won't make you an intercessor or a prayer warrior, but it will probably be enough to maintain your present relationship with Jesus. This one hour a day is referred to as survival prayer. This describes the prayer life of most Christians. How many Christians pray at least one hour every day? You must pray for one hour just to overcome temptation, but do you believe that revival will come because of this kind of praying? (Mark 14:37-38) If you are not regularly praying for one hour, make this your first goal, but not your final goal. At least an hour of prayer every day is required to overcome temptation and to help us live in a way that is acceptable to Jesus.

SEEKING THE FACE OF GOD: (Revival praying) II Chronicles 7:14

You will notice that prayer and seeking God's face are listed separately in this scripture. Prayer is not necessarily seeking the face of God. It could be seeking the hand of God. It could be a survival prayer, to keep what we already have in God. Seeking the face of God involves more than that!

SPIRITUAL WARFARE: (Prayer from the throne of authority) II Corinthians 10:3-4; Ephesians 6:12

Whenever a person becomes a Spirit-filled believer, he acquires new enemies, Satan, and his kingdom! Before we came to Jesus, we were a part of the “world system,” over which Satan rules (Ephesians 2:2-3). Some of us didn’t even know Satan existed until we became a believer. We were already involved in spiritual warfare before even being warned that there was such a thing.

No wonder the Apostle Paul encouraged Timothy to be a good soldier of Jesus Christ (II Timothy 2:3), “and fight the good fight of faith” (I Timothy 6:12). Yes, we are in a battle, and to be successful we need proper knowledge concerning our enemy so that we can identify and defeat him! Seeking the face of God is a higher level of prayer than the one-hour prayer. It involves doing whatever it takes to get the answer! It involves humbling ourselves before God. It involves getting our relationship right with God.

INTERCESSORY PRAYER: (Prayer before the throne for others) I Timothy 2:1, 3-4

Many people who sincerely seek the face of God continually will eventually become intercessors. An intercessor is a person who prays on behalf of others, he stands in the gap between God and men. We seek the face of God because of spiritual thirst. In seeking the face of God, we pray often to become more like Jesus and to become more useful in the kingdom of God. God's answer to these prayers is to fill us with His love, and a burden to pray for others. We become intercessors because of that burden and love.

IMPRECATORY PRAYER: (There are many examples in the Psalms)

Imprecatory prayer is a theological term. The word “imprecatory” is derived from “imprecation”, which is a synonym for “curse”. It is the word for prayer that attacks and seeks to destroy its object. It is, in fact, the Christian equivalent of putting a curse on something (never on someone). The furthest we can go in that direction as Christians is to pray for justice. We should pray for the end of the evil we are attacking, and pray for the forgiveness, and salvation, of those who are involved in it.

There are many Biblical examples of it, especially in the Book of Psalms. Imprecatory prayer is highly effective in stopping evil, and for that reason is something that every Christian should learn to do. With this type of praying we can aggressively attack enemy targets and destroy them.

Effective praying is our most powerful weapon. Our prayers are more powerful than you think, and the devil knows it!

ALONE WITH GOD

We should set prayer as a priority in our lives. This is something only you can do. A person who does not have an understanding of the importance of prayer and does not have a successful prayer life is always weak in his spiritual life.

Since prayer is so essential to the spiritual life, it is imperative that we devote time and effort to make sure we know how to pray effectively. There are two responsibilities in prayer, God's responsibility and ours. Prayer is both human and divine. Prayer is not an incessant repetition of words and phrases, as if it were a formula. We must understand that neither our eloquent or long prayers nor our emotional outbursts move God. Although prayer can come instinctively, to pray effectively must be learned. Mankind has prayed from the beginning, but it was not until God Himself came to live with us on this planet that we began to learn the meaning of prayer and how to pray effectively.

There is a reason why many are not experiencing results in their spiritual lives and this lack of results in large has to do with prayer. There is an alarming reality within the people of God that there are a large number of believers who have neglected this fundamental practice and some have distorted the effectiveness and purpose of it.

Prayer is talking to God with our heart, without frills, not out of obligation or routine, it is to talk to God in faith, fully believing in our hearts that He is there to attend to our supplications. It goes beyond simply opening your mouth and saying words, it is more than just a simple communication (John 14:14).

Prayer should give us tranquility and peace, as we believe by faith that what we have asked has been granted. You cannot pray with fear and doubt in your hearts, we cannot expect to hear from God unless we are totally convinced of what we have asked in prayer. The word of God warns us that whoever asks in this manner (doubtful) cannot expect anything from God (James 1:6-7).

Many of us have at one time asked ourselves, how are we to pray? The disciples asked Jesus the same question and the Lord gave the example of “The Lord’s prayer", which is the basis and prayer guide for how effective prayer is made. Based on the principles taught in this prayer we can develop our communication with the Lord with deeper and more intimate prayers. God wants to answer our prayers. He did not give us prayer with the purpose of frustrating us or with the intent of leaving our prayers unanswered.

Focus is one of the biggest reasons why believers have trouble establishing a prayer life or going deeper in prayer. Have you ever noticed that when you go to pray suddenly your mind is bombarded with all of the cares and concerns of this world? You start thinking of your responsibilities, your worries, your to-do list, and your relationships. All of a sudden these thoughts seem to come when you pray and because of this many believers have trouble establishing that consistency or that depth in their prayer life. If prayer is to be effective it must be focused, a wandering mind keeps the believer bound to the natural realm, and the excess of distracting thoughts is too heavy to allow for heavenly ascension. So how do you focus, how do you get your mind to be disciplined when you pray?

PRACTICE SILENCE

Jesus said in Matthew 6:6: “But when you pray go away by yourself shut the door behind you and pray to your father in private then your father who sees everything will reward you.” This is a very practical but effective means to establish a focused mind when you pray. Jesus here is talking about going to a private place.

There are two kinds of distractions: exterior distraction and internal distraction. Exterior distractions are things like your phone, conversations, and the cares of the world around you. To eliminate exterior distractions you must have a scheduled time and place when you pray. You must practice both spontaneous and scheduled prayer. Spontaneous prayer is all throughout the day, you can be working, you can be conversing, and you can be eating while you're in prayer. Scheduled prayer is when you set aside time to go and just focus on the presence of the lord. Jesus gives us this powerful key to shut that door, to tell our loved ones this is our time to pray, to turn off the phone, put away the work, and put away the concerns.

Interior distraction: How do you focus the mind when you have things going on inside of you internally that are causing you to lose focus when you pray? How can we focus and fight against those internal distractions? First, we have to quiet our minds when we pray. First by prayer request: Philippians 4:6-7 say this: “Don't worry about anything instead pray about everything tell God what you need and thank Him for all He has done, then you will experience God's peace which exceeds anything we can understand.”  His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. God is saying, Don’t worry about anything instead pray about everything. Worry is the flesh's powerless counterfeit for prayer. Worry is how your flesh prays but the scripture tells us that when we tell God what we need and when we thank Him for everything that He has done then we will experience God's peace. So when you unburden yourself by giving God your to-do list, by giving Him all your responsibilities that is when you experience perfect peace.

You should not just say; “Lord take care of all my responsibilities and I leave them to you and I’m not ever going to do them.” That’s not what he is saying. What he is saying is the worry over those responsibilities the concern over those tasks, that's what you give to Him. When you submit your prayer request to God you're lifting those burdens of life from off of your shoulders and you're placing them in God's hands and in doing that you experience the peace of God that fills your heart. This is the mistake many believers make, they make their prayer requests, they tell Him what they need then they feel that burden lifted from off of them. They're filled with peace and they say I feel much better thank you Jesus and then they walk away. But peace is not the conclusion of prayer it's the beginning of prayer, it's when you're filled with that peace that you can now focus your mind to go deeper into the places of prayer than ever before. So peace is not the conclusion of prayer it's the entryway. Silence puts away the exterior distractions by shutting yourself in for a moment to focus and to be alone with God.

Prayer Request helps to silence those internal distractions. Isaiah 26:3 “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee because he trusteth in thee.” When you focus your mind on the Lord, you’re filled with peace. When you focus your mind on God the cares of this world fade into the background.

Worship is also a key to focus because when you’re worshiping God you’re looking at Him. When you’re worshiping God you’re not worried about your problems you’re in awe of His presence. The glory of God is so brilliant, so beautiful and so blinding that when you’re focused on the light of His presence it washes away everything around you. You get lost in that moment raptured in His presence and all of the cares and concerns of the world fade into the background. This does not mean that you set aside your responsibilities and never again pick them up. What this means is that when your before the lord that is the time to lay things down so that you might ascend to higher places. The first step to effective prayer is focus. How do you focus? Practice silence, use the prayer request, and worship.

Luke 10:38-42: Some believers approach God like Martha, from a works-based mentality; others approach God like Mary from a fellowship-based mentality. Often we think that prayer is our working to connect with God and we’re so distracted by the work, we’re so consumed with what we think we have to do that we forget that the way was already paid.

Matthew 6:9-13: This is the Lord’s Prayer and here Jesus is teaching us how to pray. Notice that Jesus begins his prayer by saying “Our Father in heaven.” He is acknowledging who God is, He doesn’t doubt that connection with God and he doesn’t even doubt that God hears Him. He didn’t begin prayer by saying God do you hear me, which is how many of us begin. He didn’t begin that prayer by saying, God are you there?

He didn’t begin that prayer by imagining that He had to work up some connection. We do not pray to connect with God. We pray from connection with God. It’s because we are already connected with Him that we can pray. Many believers have issue with this because they imagine that their past sins disqualifies them or they think that because they skipped a few days of reading their bible or skipped church or skipped praying that now they have to work to gain back that relationship with God, It’s not a points-based system.

It’s not as though for every day that you miss praying God takes another step away from you. How could He ever leave you if He lives within you? What happens when we make mistakes, when we neglect prayer God does not distance Himself from us; it’s that we become less aware of the presence that’s always abiding with us. Instead of seeing prayer as a point-based system, instead of looking at prayer as an obligation in order to please God, look at it as an opportunity. Many believers neglect prayer because of this very reason, they think that it’s going to be work. They think that they have to exhaust themselves to conjure a connection with God, but there’s nothing that we can do in our own power or strength to ever connect with God, it’s all Him in the first place.

When you pray, go boldly, don’t let the enemy tell you that God doesn’t hear you, don’t let the enemy tell you that you have to work for that connection with God, and don’t let the enemy shame you because of your past, but do what the Bible says in Hebrews 4:16 . Imagine how much time you could save in prayer if instead of begging God to hear you, you simply believe that He already does. This does not mean to save time in prayer as in spend less time in prayer. What we mean is all those wasted moments of pleading and begging, we come at Him with an orphaned mentality, trying to work up that relationship that’s already ours. You could be enjoying more of your time in prayer instead of going through that initial moment of working and trying like Martha who imagined that she had to work for that connection with the Lord.

FAITHFULNESS TO PRAYER

To become faithful in daily prayer you must make up your mind concerning prayer. We must choose to pray more. There are spiritual disciplines that we must choose to practice every day. Prayer is a spiritual act, but it’s also a practical discipline. That’s the partnership that we have with God. God will do the impossible after we’ve done the possible.  Every believer wants to pray consistently, but some have a certain view of prayer that actually keeps them from praying consistently. We imagine that daily prayer is like climbing a ladder. I prayed Monday through Friday and for every day of the week that I pray consistently I take another step up that ladder. Then we imagine that if we miss a day of prayer we’ve fallen off the ladder and we’ve lost all of our progress, everything is gone now, and our connection with God is gone.

Every now and then we’re filled with guilt and shame and we’re even filled with regret because we think that we’ve somehow messed up or blemished our record. If you think of prayer in that way it’s going to be very difficult to pray faithfully, because as you go to pray or re-establish your prayer life you’re just going to be thinking of all the days that you’ve missed.

Here’s something that’s liberating, when you miss days of prayer and come back to prayer, you will come back to that prayer life, you begin to establish. God is not looking to see how much we pray, that’s not how God is. When we go to pray after days of missing prayer, God will be there to embrace us. Sometimes the guilt of having missed days of prayer can affect our faithfulness to prayer. Sometimes missing prayer on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday will prevent us from praying on Thursday because we think, I have to do all this work again, all my progress is lost. Looking at it that way is a religious way to approach prayer (Matthew 26:40-41).

We must commit to pray faithfully every day. Establish that spiritual discipline in our lives. We must make that decision and we must arrange our entire schedule around it. Guard your prayer life and don’t let anyone or anything compromise it. Let that be a sacred time for you.

a. Él sabe que la oración fue efectiva.

b. Sabe que somos conscientes del peligro.

SOMETHING WORSE THAN GOING TO HELL

“The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved. For the hurt of the daughter of my people am I hurt; I am black; astonishment hath taken hold on me. Is there no balm in Gilead; [is there] no physician there? Why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?” (Jeremiah 8:20-22)

In context, this passage is about the judgment of God that would result in no harvest for the Jews. But here we will take it to be the cry of lost souls in hell. Imagine working a whole year, and in the end having nothing to show for it because your crops could not stand the test of frost, the test of rain, or the test of drought. Similarly, because people's lives won’t measure up, the text in Jeremiah 8:20 "The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved," is one that will undoubtedly be repeated many times in hell by those who will weep and wail that they squandered their opportunity to get saved, and get right with God, but did not.

Summer has come, harvest is past, and still, we are not saved! Isn’t that the cry of the rich man in Luke 16? Now think about this the rich man in Luke 16 was crying 2,000 years ago to have a finger dipped in water to touch his tongue. He is still crying 2,000 years later! He will still be crying 2,000 years from now, and so on, and yet you ask, "How can there be something worse than going to hell?" The one thing that is worse than going to hell is going to hell and taking someone with you.

I had to talk to a friend recently, who just moved out of the inner city because his 15-year-old son has been staying out all night, and is seemingly out of control. This friend is a former pastor who is backslid and only goes to church once or twice a year. When I told him there was one thing worse than going to hell, and what it was, there was almost an audible groan you could hear on the other end of the phone.

I don’t want this dad in hell with his son. It’s bad enough if he goes there, but his sorrow will be doubled to hear his son cry and say, "Daddy why didn’t you warn me about this place?! Daddy, why didn’t you set a better example before me?! Daddy, why did you stop bringing me and Momma to church?!

If you don’t know Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior journey with me 1,000 years into the future and this is you speaking. "Summer has come, harvest is past, and I am doomed." It is doubly maddening because you will cry out and say, "that preacher told me, ’O why, O why didn’t I listen to him when it could have made a difference.’" I pray to God you don’t go there, and if you do go there despite my prayers, I pray you go alone. I am afraid though, that hell is going to be full of children cussing their parents, brothers crying to their brothers, cousins crying to their cousins, and classmates crying to their classmates for their poor example and bad influence. I don’t think anybody goes to hell alone, I think the power of influence is much stronger than we would like to imagine. Perhaps the rich man in Luke 16 was so concerned for his 5 brothers because he knew he had set a bad example for them, and as bad as hell was it horrified him that his brothers would wind up there also. You see there is one thing worse than going to hell, and that is taking someone with you.

Verse 22 is God’s indictment of the church: Jeremiah 8:21-22 “For the hurt of the daughter of my people am I hurt; I am black; astonishment hath taken hold on me [Is there] no balm in Gilead; [is there] no physician there? Why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?”

We read astonishment hath taken hold of God. What astonished Him? That there was balm available and yet it was not applied. This thought reminds me of another verse, Isaiah 59:16: And he saw that [there was] no man and wondered that [there was] no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him.

What made God wonder?

1. God knew prayer was effective, and He wondered why people weren’t praying.

2. He knew His people were aware of those heading to eternity without salvation and He wondered why they weren’t interceding and pleading but were busy enjoying picnic lunches and a glorious sunset. Church take your eyes off the sunset for a moment and look at those around you!

3. A friend I know was weeping after his 10-year-old was arrested for shoplifting. The Police officer said, "The only way to get out of this now is to go to court and prove you didn’t do it. For those in Hell, the only way for them to get out is to go to court and prove they didn’t do it, and that is impossible. Now is the day of salvation, there is no opportunity after this life. God knows we know the condition of the world and wonders why we aren’t doing more.

a. He knows prayer was effective.

b. He knows we are aware of the danger.

c. He knows that those who are aware of the danger are also those who know that prayer works! But instead of praying about those in mortal danger our prayers often concern trifling matters of creature comforts. If your prayers were scientifically studied how would they be categorized? 90% for self-needs, 9% for other friends' needs, and 1% for lost souls. If that describes you then it is no wonder God wonders.

4.  He knows that we know there is something better than going to heaven, and that is taking someone with you. It has to amaze Him when He sees the unconcern in His people.

I wonder how many of us were responsible that someone else started doing drugs, or drinking, or got them involved in sexual immorality. That is, you are the one that introduced them to these things, and today you are on your way to heaven and they are on their way to hell. The bible says there will be no tears in heaven, and part of the reason we won’t groan for them there is because it wouldn’t do them any good. If you are going to weep for souls you have to do it now while it can do some good, lest your former friends come to that unhappy day where they say, "the harvest is past, the summer is ended and still we are not saved."

CRUCES INESPERADOS

~ Marcos 8:34-35; 9:33-37; 10:35-45; 15:21 ~

Jesús podría haberse negado a tomar Su cruz.

UNEXPECTED CROSSES

~ Mark 8:34-35; 9:33-37; 10:35-45; 15:21 ~

"Something good is going to happen to you" proclaimed a television evangelist. Earlier in a sermon, he joyfully announced that "Christianity is the best deal a person ever had." Before his sermon, he had interviewed a man who was introduced as a "new Christian".

"John, tell us what happened when God came into your life," he said. John told how his once failing business had been turned into a great financial success. He had a beautiful home. His marriage was happier. His children were better behaved and healthy and "I have a smile on my face all the time". All of this came, he said, when "God came into my life."

Without a doubt, good things can indeed happen to us when we follow Jesus. The improved lives of countless people are testimony to how God can help us. But what is the main point of discipleship? Ought we to proclaim the gospel so that we imply "Come to Jesus and all your problems will be solved and everything will be made right in your life"? Is that the message of Christ?

Let's be honest. We are selfish. We want all our aches and pains to be cured. We want a life that is immune from heartache, pain, and struggle. We're looking for rewards from our religion, not responsibilities; a cushion, not a cross. If we had a choice, most of us would rather have servants than be a servant!

The trouble is, the one we follow walked up a narrow way, a way which led through suffering, rejection, and death, a way up a hill called Calvary. Are we to expect our faith in him to shield us from the same cross? The true test of our discipleship is found not in the easy times when all is going well, but in the hard times when the world is caving in on us.

WHO WILL BE THE GREATEST?

Jesus and His disciples are on the road. When they get to where they are going Jesus asks them, in effect, "What was all the fuss about back there on the road?"

And the disciples are silent. They are silent because they are ashamed. They have been discussing who should be the greatest in the kingdom. Who shall sit on the cabinet when we get Jesus elected as Messiah? Who shall receive the greatest glory, the greatest rewards? After all, isn't that what discipleship is all about?

No, says Jesus, "If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all" (Mk. 9:35). Here is an odd kingdom, a kingdom not of crowns, kings, pomp, and circumstance, but of the poor, the children, the little ones, the least and the last. He puts a child in the midst of them as an illustration of what he is talking about for who is more helpless, weaker, and more vulnerable than a child (9:36-37)?

ARE YOU ABLE TO DRINK THE CUP?

James and John want Jesus to do something spectacular for them: "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory," (10:37). Is this too much to ask? They have left everything and followed Jesus! Jesus asks them, "Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?" (10:38). Do you know what he means by the "cup" and the "baptism"? He is talking about His cross. Once again, the content of discipleship is determined by the cross (8:34).

There are two difficult words in verse 34, "deny" and "cross". These words were important in Jesus' life and teaching, although they may be offensive to would-be followers. This self-chosen way of Jesus of self-denial and cross-bearing was God's will for Jesus and thus also for Jesus' followers.

As might be expected, the other ten were upset and angry. Jesus had to start again. He called them together and told them that the Gentiles enjoy lordship and exercise of authority. In verse 43 Jesus said, "Whoever would be great among you must be your servant." This statement transforms the traditional notion of greatness. Greatness is measured not in terms of the number of our servants, but in terms of the quality and extent of our service.

What does it mean to take up the cross? Jesus does not necessarily mean that we are to bear some condition that befalls us in life, such as a physical or emotional infirmity. These circumstances may cause us pain, but they are not necessarily the "cross" of which he speaks here.

Rather, the "cross" is something that we willingly take up as a result of being Disciples of Christ. Jesus could have refused to take up His cross. He could have chosen to be successful by the world's standards of success. He could have raised an army and waged war against the Roman occupational forces. He could have become a miracle worker, a great lecturer in Hillel's school of theology, and used his powers to achieve glory and prestige.

But He willingly chose another way. He chose to be obedient to God's will for his life. He chose to drink the cup of death. He chose to be thrust under the waters of suffering and death on the cross. Thereby He pointed the way for us.

We are always in danger of getting the wrong idea about the Christian faith. It is so easy to assume that the point of being a Christian is to accept Christ so that everything will work out for the best for us. But to accept Christ also means to accept the cross.

Jesus notes that the Gentiles lord over one another, and worship power and glory (10:43-44).  Jesus is our example of leadership. He "came not to be served but to serve, to give His life as a ransom for many" (10:45). What does this say to us about leadership in the church? All Christian work is service, not privilege or prestige. In the church, everyone is a minister, that is, everyone is a servant of others.

THE UNEXPECTED CROSSES

Mark 8:34 is the most descriptive statement in the Bible regarding the nature of discipleship. Each committed Christian has a cross given to him. It is a mistake to call all our suffering a cross. Even the wicked have sorrows, but they have no crosses. Our cross is that suffering that results from our faithful identification with Christ, our Christian duty.

In Mark 15:21 we are told about Simon of Cyrene and what happened to him. He was not expecting anything like this to happen to him on this day. But we see that he was never the same after this experience, it changed his life forever. Cross-bearing will change you!

WHAT IS THE CROSS?

To take up our cross does not necessarily mean that we are to bear some condition that befalls us in life, such as a physical or emotional infirmity. These circumstances may cause us pain, but they are not necessarily the “cross” of which Jesus is speaking about.

The cross is the emblem of all suffering and sacrifice for the cause of Christ and His work. It is something we take up voluntarily; accept it, not merely endure what is laid upon us. This is what changes the cross into a blessing. Jesus could have refused to take up His cross. He could have chosen to be successful by the world’s standards of success. He could have raised an army and waged war against the Romans. He could have become a miracle worker, a great lecturer, and used His powers to achieve glory and prestige, but He chose the cross! The cross is doing our duty, being faithful to God and His cause.

THE CROSS IS A TEST

It tests us to see whether we are disciples in deed and in truth, or only seekers after the loaves and fishes. Cross-bearing is trying, laborious, sorrowful, humiliating, and inevitable to the follower of Jesus. The cross is not optional for the true believer who wants to do the will of God. The person who attempts to live this life doesn’t have to go looking for a cross to bear; it will come, and when it comes, you will have to decide whether to take it or reject it.

WHAT IS MY CROSS?

It may be the giving up of certain pleasures. It may be the endurance of reproach and unkindness or remaining in poverty and obscurity for the good of others. Someone else gets all the glory, but you did the work. It may be the suffering of losses and persecution for Christ’s sake. It includes the endurance of God’s will with patience and thanksgiving.
